Description
Alice Leywin is the wife of Reynolds Leywin and the mother of Arthur and Eleanor Leywin. Before settling down to raise a family, she led the life of an adventurer, working as a proctor for basic practical exams at the Adventurer's Guild's Valden branch. It was there that she first met her future husband, Reynolds, who was immediately smitten upon seeing her. Eventually, she joined his adventuring party, the Twin Horns, where her skills proved invaluable.
As a person, Alice is a woman of contrasts. While she is described as kindhearted, gentle, and warm, she is also the one who holds the reins in the Leywin household, often coming across as dominant and quick to anger, particularly when disciplining her husband for his more childish or brash tendencies. Her most defining trait is her deep and fierce love for her family. This manifests most clearly as a constant, gnawing worry for her son Arthur, who has a habit of returning home with injuries. More than seeing him become a hero or a powerful mage, her deepest desire is simply for him to come home safe. This protective instinct is the core of her motivations, driving her to be a stabilizing and nurturing presence in the lives of her husband and children.
Alice's role in the story is primarily that of the family's emotional anchor and protector. Her background as an adventurer, however, means she is far from a passive figure. Her past skills become relevant again as the continent of Dicathen is engulfed in war. Initially, her confidence as a healer was shattered by a traumatic event: she was unable to save a former party member, Lensa, from a poison that destroyed her mana core, an incident that left a deep psychological scar. As the war progresses, she is forced to confront this trauma, eventually recovering her full abilities and fighting alongside her family, serving as a medic for the Dicathen forces.
Her relationships are central to her character. With Reynolds, she shares a deep, loving bond, although she is often the one to reign in his enthusiasm and reprimand his carelessness. Their relationship is tested severely after the bandit attack where they believe Arthur to have died; both fall into a deep grief, and Alice becomes so distraught that she attempts to take her own life while pregnant with Eleanor. Her relationship with Arthur is defined by her protective love, which grows into a quiet acceptance of his need for independence, even if she disapproves. After learning the truth about his reincarnation, she is shocked but ultimately reaffirms her love for him as her son. She is a devoted mother to Eleanor as well, ensuring her daughter knows about her older brother during his long absence.
Throughout the narrative, Alice undergoes significant development. She transitions from a retired adventurer and anxious mother to a woman who reclaims her past strength. She overcomes her healing-related trauma, which had limited her for years, and actively participates in the war effort, demonstrating resilience and a renewed sense of purpose. Her emotional journey also includes surviving the depths of grief and emerging to rebuild her family.
In terms of abilities, Alice is an exceptional Emitter, a type of mage commonly known as a healer. Her skills are considered highly talented, even among Emitters. Her most notable ability is a powerful area-of-effect spell that can heal all allies within a certain radius, a feat that is rare and impressive. During her days as an adventurer, her restorative powers were a crucial asset to the Twin Horns Party.
