Description
Matthew Cuthbert is the older brother of Marilla Cuthbert and the co-owner of Green Gables, a farm on Prince Edward Island. He never married and spent most of his life living quietly with his sister, managing the farm. He is a shy, reserved man who struggles to speak with women and avoids social situations whenever possible. Despite his reticence, he possesses a gentle, good-natured disposition and a deep well of kindness.

When the orphan Anne Shirley is mistakenly sent to the Cuthberts instead of the boy they had requested to help with the farm work, Matthew is immediately captivated by her lively imagination and spirited chatter. He quickly becomes her strongest advocate, using his quiet stubbornness to persuade Marilla to let Anne stay. From that point onward, Matthew’s primary motivation is Anne’s happiness. He watches over her with warm, unconditional affection, spoiling her in small ways and always taking her side in disagreements with Marilla.

Matthew and Anne share a profound bond; Anne considers him a kindred spirit. He is the first person in her life who fully accepts her imaginative nature without criticism. In turn, Anne brings joy and lightness into his previously solitary world. His relationship with Marilla is respectful and cooperative, though he often employs silent, steadfast looks to sway her decisions rather than direct argument.

Throughout the story, Matthew acts as a steady emotional anchor for Anne. He quietly encourages her growth, celebrates her achievements, and comforts her in times of distress. He has no special abilities beyond his farming skills, but his greatest strength lies in his empathetic, nonjudgmental presence and his ability to show love through action rather than words.

Matthew’s sudden death from a heart attack, triggered by the news of a bank failure, is a pivotal turning point. His loss forces Anne to confront grief and mature rapidly, leading her to sacrifice a university scholarship in order to stay at Green Gables and support Marilla. His memory remains a guiding influence throughout the rest of the series.
