Description
Matthew Cuthbert is the older brother of Marilla Cuthbert and the co-owner of Green Gables, a farm on Prince Edward Island. He never married and spent most of his life living quietly with his sister, managing the farm. He is a shy, reserved man who struggles to speak with women and avoids social situations whenever possible. Despite his reticence, he possesses a gentle, good-natured disposition and a deep well of kindness.
When the orphan Anne Shirley is mistakenly sent to the Cuthberts instead of the boy they had requested to help with the farm work, Matthew is immediately captivated by her lively imagination and spirited chatter.
