Description
Crusch Karsten is the head of the House of Karsten, a powerful ducal family that has supported the royal family of the Kingdom of Lugnica for generations. As the household's matriarch, she is also one of five royal candidates selected to compete for the right to become the country's forty-second ruler, and she is initially considered the most likely person to win the throne. Although she is a woman, Crusch almost exclusively wears masculine military attire, believing that adopting the appearance and bearing of a man is necessary to avoid being mediocre in her dual roles as a noble and a swordswoman. She is a striking figure, with long dark green hair, narrow amber eyes, and a posture that gives off a sharp, blade-like impression of righteousness and resolve.

Crusch’s personality is defined by honesty, integrity, and a powerful sense of duty. She is a person of action, possessing the pride of a warrior and an uncompromising desire to follow through on her convictions. This makes her straightforward and critical of ambiguous attitudes, both in herself and in others, as she holds everyone to the same high standards. While she is a charismatic leader and a just individual, she is also notably dense when it comes to matters of romantic affection, a fact that leads her to be completely unaware of the deep feelings her closest companion, Felix Argyle, holds for her. In her public life, however, she is known for her practical nature and her refusal to engage in the kind of political scheming or "belly art" often associated with nobles, preferring to let her actions speak for themselves.

Her central motivation, and the core of her political platform, is to sever the ancient covenant between the Kingdom of Lugnica and the Divine Dragon, Volcanica. She believes that the kingdom has become overly reliant on the dragon's protection, which has made its people weak and complacent. Her goal is to build a self-sufficient, independent nation, free from the influence of higher powers, a vision that sets her apart from other royal candidates. This conviction was shaped in her youth by her friendship with Fourier Lugunica, a prince who died from illness, and her admiration for the wise, self-reliant rule of past "Lion Kings".

Within the story, Crusch plays a major role during the royal selection arc. She forms a temporary alliance with the protagonist Subaru Natsuki to defeat the White Whale, a legendary demon beast, a quest that requires her to risk her political standing and military strength. Her own faction is small but powerful, built on merit and loyalty. Her most significant relationship is with her knight, Felix Argyle, a skilled healer and a demi-human who has been devoted to her since she rescued him from a traumatic childhood. Their bond is one of deep trust and friendship, with Felix serving as her confidant and emotional support, even as he harbors an unspoken love for her. She also develops a strong working relationship with the aged swordsman Wilhelm van Astrea, whom she takes into her employ, and later begins training under him to further improve her swordsmanship. Her past connection with the prince, Fourier, is also foundational, as his death and their conversations about the kingdom’s future steeled her resolve to become a ruler who could lead without relying on the dragon.

Crusch’s development is marked by significant hardship. At the end of the White Whale battle, she falls victim to the Archbishop of Gluttony, Lye Batenkaitos, who consumes all of her memories. Stripped of her past, her identity, and all the experiences that made her who she was, she nevertheless shows a remarkably strong mentality, vowing to become an even better person than she was before. This tragedy is compounded later when she is infected with a terrible curse from the dragon's blood, inflicted by the Archbishop of Lust, Capella. Despite these devastating setbacks, her core spirit of resilience remains intact, and later events hint at a potential recovery of her lost memories.

In terms of abilities, Crusch is a formidable combatant. She is a highly skilled swordswoman whose talent and years of grueling training allow her to best multiple opponents at once. Her magical affinity is wind, and she possesses a rare power known as the "Divine Protection of Wind Reading." This blessing allows her to literally read the wind, granting her the ability to sense the emotions of others and, most notably, to infallibly know when someone is lying to her. She masterfully combines her swordsmanship with her wind magic to unleash her signature technique, "One Blow, A Hundred Felled" (Hyakunin Hitotachi). This devastating attack creates an invisible, razor-sharp blade from the wind itself, enabling her to cut any target within her line of sight, a power potent enough to slice through the monstrous White Whale's impenetrable hide.
