Description
Amate Yuzuriha, who operates under the alias Machu, is the central protagonist of the story. She is a seventeen-year-old high school student living in the Izuma Colony within Side 6. Standing at 147 centimeters tall, she has a notably petite frame and is recognized by her short red hair, which has indigo-blue roots suggesting it is dyed, contrasting with the natural hair color of her mother. She lives with her mother, Tamaki Yuzuriha, while her father works away from the colony as a diplomat. Despite growing up in a privileged and peaceful environment, she finds her daily life to be unfulfilling and somehow artificial.

Machu possesses a proactive, bold, and impulsive personality that often leads her to act on her emotions without hesitation. She is fiercely anti-authority and distrustful of the adults in her life, a trait that draws comparisons to previous Gundam protagonists. Her frustration with her seemingly perfect life creates friction with her mother, whom she feels is more concerned with appearances than with understanding her daughter's lack of ambition. A signature expression of her discontent is a piercing, scrutinizing side-eye, which quickly became a recognizable character trait. She is physically athletic and has a habit of doing handstands to feel oriented under what she perceives as true gravity, as opposed to the centrifugal force of her colony. Her longing for freedom is symbolized by jellyfish, which she keeps as decorations on her belongings and once listed as her career goal on a school form as a joke.

Her motivation to break free from her monotonous life is catalyzed by an encounter with a war refugee named Nyaan. After this meeting leads her to the controls of the advanced mobile suit GQuuuuuuX, she decides to participate in illegal mobile suit duels known as Clan Battles under the nickname Machu, which originated from her childhood. She is driven by the desire to experience a mysterious phenomenon she calls the Kira-Kira, which are sensory flashes she experiences during combat. Her primary goal becomes to partner with Shuji Itō, a mysterious graffiti artist and pilot of the Red Gundam, in order to earn enough money to travel to Earth, where she dreams of experiencing true freedom, such as swimming in the ocean.

Within the story, Machu serves as the pilot of the GQuuuuuuX for the Clan Battle team known as the Pomeranians. Her most significant relationship is with Shuji Itō, who becomes her MAV, or Mobile Assault Vanguard, partner. She develops a deep emotional attachment to him, which at times manifests as possessiveness and jealousy, particularly when she feels their unique Newtype connection is threatened. Her relationship with Nyaan is also central to the narrative, beginning with an antagonistic encounter that evolves into a complex friendship, though it is strained by jealousy and feelings of betrayal over their shared connection to Shuji.

Throughout the series, Machu undergoes significant character development. Initially self-centered and driven by her own desires for excitement and freedom, she is forced to confront the harsh, life-or-death realities of her chosen world, including witnessing Shuji kill an opponent. Her actions have consequences, leading to her becoming a fugitive and causing harm to those close to her. Through these hardships, she learns to truly empathize and connect with others, maturing from a rebellious teenager into a person capable of understanding and reconciling with her friends and family.

Machu possesses notable abilities, primarily as a powerful Newtype. Despite having no formal piloting experience, she is able to instinctively activate the GQuuuuuuX's advanced Omega Psycommu system and skillfully dodge attacks. Her athleticism is demonstrated by her agility, such as running across the limbs of mobile suits and jumping into cockpits with ease. Her latent Newtype powers allow her to enter a state of resonance with other pilots, enabling telepathic coordination and heightened spatial awareness, a phenomenon she personally refers to as feeling the Kira-Kira. As she grows emotionally, her abilities evolve from mere sensory bursts into a genuine tool for understanding and connecting with the people around her.
