Description
Masayoshi Hashimoto is a student at the Advanced Nurturing High School who begins the story as a member of Class A. During the first year, when a leadership conflict erupts within Class A, Hashimoto quickly identifies Arisu Sakayanagi as the more capable candidate for control of the class and aligns himself with her faction, becoming part of her inner circle. He remains a loyal supporter of Sakayanagi through the first and second years, though his true allegiance is ultimately to himself.

Hashimoto is inherently self-serving and pragmatic, with no real loyalty to anyone other than himself. He consistently sides with whichever party appears to be winning, placing his bets on the strongest team to ensure he remains in a position of advantage. Despite his light, friendly demeanor—which can make him seem shallow—this attitude helps him blend into groups and socialize with ease. He possesses quick wits and a talent for reading situations, allowing him to maneuver adeptly as circumstances change. His approach to life is shaped by a deep mistrust of people; he believes betrayal is common and advocates for a self-serving strategy.

His motivations center on self-preservation and the goal of graduating from Class A. He openly admits in his second year that he aspires to contribute to Class A, though his methods are opportunistic. Hashimoto is not driven by ideology or personal vendetta but by a calculated desire to stay on top.

In the story, Hashimoto serves as a subordinate and informant within Sakayanagi’s faction, often observing other classes and gathering intelligence. At the Mixed Training Camp during the first year, he is placed in Kiyotaka Ayanokoji’s group and uses his extensive social network to engage in open conversations with Miyabi Nagumo, the student council president, about Ayanokoji and other topics. Their collective efforts allow the group to avoid expulsion by meeting the school’s minimum requirements. During the second year, he continues to monitor events such as an assembly organized by Honami Ichinose, noting which students attend for intel on other classes.

Hashimoto’s key relationships include Arisu Sakayanagi, who is aware of his cunning nature but chooses to keep him in her faction despite the risk. He also interacts with Kiyotaka Ayanokoji, Miyabi Nagumo, and, in secret, Ryuji Kanzaki and Kakeru Ryuen of Class B, hinting at independent maneuvering. His relationship with Sakayanagi is transactional: she values his utility while recognizing his lack of true loyalty.

Over the course of the story, Hashimoto shows development in that he begins to pursue his own route to reach Class A by any means, not solely relying on Sakayanagi. Secret discussions with students from other classes suggest he is hedging his bets and exploring alternative paths. However, his core self-serving nature remains constant.

Hashimoto has well-balanced abilities. His academic skill is rated average to above average, his physical ability is slightly above average, and his adaptability is high. He has a strong social network and is adept at dissolving into groups. His social contribution is below average, reflecting his prioritization of self-interest over collective effort. He is a member of the tennis club at the school. Overall, he is a capable but untrustworthy figure who navigates the competitive environment through pragmatism and situational awareness.
