TV-Series
Description
Kei Karuizawa is a second-year student at the Advanced Nurturing High School, belonging to Class D. Born on March 8, she stands 154cm tall. She presents herself as a fashionable and assertive gal-type girl, often with her long blonde hair tied in a high ponytail. Her official school evaluation at the start of the second year lists her academic ability at D+ (40), physical ability at C- (44), thinking and adaptability at B- (61), and social contribution at D+ (40).
Her background is defined by severe trauma from middle school, where she was a target of relentless bullying due to her good grades and appearance. The bullying included physical assault, which left a scar on her abdomen, as well as psychological torment such as having her belongings stolen or defiled. This experience forced her to take a long absence from school, causing her grades to plummet. To escape this past and protect herself from being victimized again upon entering high school, she constructed a false persona. She began a fake romantic relationship with the popular and kind-hearted Yosuke Hirata, using his status as a shield to secure a top position in the class's social hierarchy. Underneath this confident and sometimes selfish exterior, however, lies a deeply insecure girl who is terrified of returning to her former weakness.
Her primary motivation throughout the story shifts from pure self-preservation to a deep commitment to Kiyotaka Ayanokoji. Initially, she acts as a parasite, attaching herself to powerful individuals like Hirata to ensure her safety. After Ayanokoji discovers her secret, she forms a cooperative relationship with him, which gradually develops into genuine romantic love. By the second year, her motivations are strongly tied to supporting Ayanokoji and maintaining their relationship, which has become her new source of stability.
In the story, Kei serves as a crucial ally and the primary romantic partner of Kiyotaka Ayanokoji. She is one of the few people who knows aspects of his true nature and acts as his trusted confidante. Her role has evolved from a supporting character to one of the main heroines, and her actions often have a significant impact on class dynamics, particularly among the female students where she holds substantial influence.
Her key relationships define much of her development. Her relationship with Yosuke Hirata was a strategic, non-romantic arrangement for protection, which officially ended during their first year. Her friendship with Maya Sato is tested when Sato's feelings for Ayanokoji are revealed, but the two reconcile, demonstrating Kei's capacity for genuine friendship and empathy. Her most important relationship is with Kiyotaka Ayanokoji, who started as her "host" and became her official boyfriend after she accepted his confession. During the second year, their relationship deepens with increased intimacy, including their first kiss, and they function as a close, often teasing couple. She also experiences conflict with the first-year student Ichika Amasawa, who stalks her and interferes in her relationship with Ayanokoji.
Kei undergoes significant character development from the first year to the second. She moves from being a fragile person hiding behind a mask of strength to someone who exhibits genuine mental fortitude. In her second year, she shows more assertiveness, such as openly criticizing classmates who blindly follow others during a special exam. She overcomes much of her dependency, becoming a more outward-facing source of strength who can challenge the class to grow. Her jealousy and insecurity remain, but she increasingly chooses to trust her partner and focus on her own goals.
Despite her average academic and physical ratings, Kei possesses notable abilities. Her greatest asset is her exceptional mental strength and indomitable will, recognized even by formidable characters like Kakeru Ryuen. Having survived horrific bullying, her resilience allows her to stand firm when threatened. She also possesses sharp perceptive skills and high social intelligence, allowing her to read the atmosphere and people's intentions effectively. This makes her a highly capable partner for Ayanokoji, as she can often understand his unspoken instructions and act on them without direct communication.
