Description
Obanai Iguro is the Serpent Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps. He is instantly identifiable by the white bandages wrapped over the lower half of his face, his heterochromatic eyes, and the small albino snake Kaburamaru that is almost always coiled around his neck and shoulders. Beneath a cold, severe manner lies a man shaped by a profoundly traumatic childhood and a lifelong sense of guilt.
Obanai was born into the Iguro clan, a family that had secretly made a bargain with a snake-like demon named Amakusa. In exchange for wealth and protection, the clan regularly offered its newborn children as food to the demon. Obanai, the first boy born into the clan in hundreds of years and marked by unusual eyes, was raised from birth as a special sacrifice. He was kept confined in a cage and treated as an offering rather than a child. When he was still young, a distant relative tried to help him escape, but the effort failed. The relative was killed, and the demon punished Obanai by slashing his mouth from the corners of his lips almost to his ears, a scar that explains the bandages he wears for the rest of his life. He was eventually rescued by members of the Demon Slayer Corps, who destroyed the demon, but the death of the relative who tried to save him and the loss of his clan left him carrying a deep conviction that his survival was undeserved.
That belief shaped much of his personality. Obanai is stern, blunt, and extremely demanding, especially of other demon slayers. He has little patience for slackness or perceived weakness and is quick to berate those he feels are not taking the fight against demons seriously enough. Early in the story he is openly hostile toward Tanjiro Kamado because of Tanjiro's refusal to accept the Corps' rules regarding Nezuko, and he holds a generally low opinion of inexperienced slayers. His harshness is not born of cruelty but of an absolute commitment to the Corps and a knowledge, gained from his own childhood, of what happens when humans let their guard down around demons. He is deeply devoted to the leader of the Corps, Kagaya Ubuyashiki, whom he regards as the person who saved his life and gave his existence meaning, and he places his duty above his own safety. His strictness also extends to his fellow Hashira, as seen when he harshly criticizes Tengen Uzui for retiring after sustaining severe injuries.
Despite his cold exterior, Obanai carries one deep and important emotional attachment: his love for Mitsuri Kanroji, the Love Hashira. He cares for her quietly and expresses it through actions rather than words, giving her gifts such as the green socks she wears and remaining protective of her in battle. Because of his shame over his scarred face and his belief that he is unworthy of happiness, he never openly confesses his feelings. One of the clearest signs of how much she means to him is that he taught himself to read purely so he could answer the letters she kept sending him. His relationship with Kaburamaru is similarly significant; the snake is not a pet but a combat partner. Because Obanai is nearly blind in one eye, Kaburamaru senses enemy movements, air currents, and vibrations, and relays that information to him, effectively functioning as an extension of his senses in battle.
In the Infinity Castle arc, Obanai's role becomes central to the final battle. He and Mitsuri are separated inside the shifting fortress and fight the demon Nakime, who controls the castle's layout, and later confront Muzan Kibutsuji alongside the other surviving Hashira. During the fight against Muzan, Obanai's eyes are slashed by the demon's attacks, leaving him completely blind. Even so, he continues to fight, guided by his bond with Kaburamaru and the heightened perception of the Transparent World, which briefly allows him to see the vital organs inside Muzan's body. He awakens his Demon Slayer Mark, which appears as snake-like patterns across his arm and chest, and he is able to turn his blade red, a state that slows Muzan's regeneration. In the final moments of the battle, Obanai dies from his wounds beside Mitsuri. Before his death, he expresses a wish that defeating Muzan will purify what he calls his tainted blood and that he may be reborn in a peaceful world without demons, where he can finally tell Mitsuri how he feels. In the epilogue of the story, the two are reincarnated in the modern era as a human couple, together at last.
