Description
Hajime Kokonoi, often called by his nickname Koko, is a character whose sharp mind and cold demeanor mask a deep psychological wound. At a glance, he is known for his distinctive appearance, which includes black hair styled into a deathhawk that sweeps across the right side of his face, while the left side features shaved lines. He has penetrating black eyes and high, arched eyebrows that give him a perpetually angry or intense expression. Standing at 174 centimeters tall with a slender build, Kokonoi often dresses in flashy clothing and wears a long gold earring in his left ear.
Kokonoi's personality is defined by a calculating and seemingly self-serving nature. He views the world as a series of logical calculations and tends to act primarily in his own interest, approaching powerful people only to use them for personal gain. However, this materialistic and ruthless exterior is a direct result of a traumatic childhood incident. Kokonoi was once an ordinary student who harbored deep feelings for Akane Inui, the older sister of his close friend, Seishu Inui. After confessing his love to her, a fire broke out at the Inui residence. In the chaos, Kokonoi rushed in and rescued Seishu, mistaking him for Akane due to their similar features. Akane survived but suffered severe burns, and her family was faced with an impossible hospital bill of 40 million yen.
This event became the catalyst for Kokonoi’s entire life philosophy. Desperate to save Akane, he became obsessively driven to acquire money by any means necessary. As a child, he researched methods of earning money through books and the internet, learning both legal and illegal strategies. He eventually organized a group of young thieves and moved into more sophisticated financial crimes, such as credit card fraud and acting as a criminal intermediary for the wealthy. Despite his tireless efforts, Akane died before he could raise the required sum. Unable to cope with the failure and the loss, Kokonoi repressed his original goal and transformed his desperation into an all-consuming obsession with money itself, believing that having more of it could have prevented the tragedy.
In terms of role within the story, Kokonoi is a financial genius whose abilities are highly sought after by major criminal organizations. His talent for generating funds is so significant that it is considered one of the three pillars that propelled the Tokyo Manji Gang into a powerful criminal empire, alongside the intellect of Tetta Kisaki and the charisma of Manjiro Sano. He served as the Elite Guard Captain for the tenth generation of the Black Dragon gang, where he was the financial mastermind. After the Black Dragon's fall, he and Inui joined the Tokyo Manji Gang as members of the First Division. His expertise later led to him being forcibly recruited by the Tenjiku gang through coercion, where he served as their treasurer. In the conflict surrounding the War of the Three Titans arc, Kokonoi aligns himself with the Kanto Manji Gang, taking on a high-ranking staff role where his strategic economic manipulation proves to be a vital asset in large-scale gang conflicts, demonstrating that power in this world is not limited to physical strength alone.
The core relationship in Kokonoi's life is with Seishu Inui. Following Akane's death, Kokonoi became unable to separate Inui from the memory of his lost love, projecting Akane's image onto her younger brother. He clings to Inui, viewing him as a living remnant of Akane and following his lead as a form of atonement. This unhealthy codependency is highlighted in a poignant scene where Kokonoi tearfully kisses a sleeping Inui, seeing Akane in his face. Despite this, their relationship is fraught with tension, as Inui wants to be seen for himself, not as a substitute for his sister. This leads to an emotionally charged confrontation where Kokonoi is forced to realize that he has been living for money rather than facing his grief. He eventually learns to separate from Inui and walk his own path, moving from a place of desperate attachment to a more independent, though still morally grey, existence.
Kokonoi's development is a slow process of confronting his trauma. He begins as a desperate child trying to save a loved one, transforms into a cold, profit-driven delinquent obsessed with currency as a shield against powerlessness, and finally begins to untangle his identity from the past. While he excels at fighting, able to hold his own against capable opponents, his true abilities lie entirely in his unparalleled financial acumen. He is a master of schemes, from petty theft to complex investment fraud, and his strategic mind for making money is his most defining and dangerous trait.
