Description
Kanon Hisui is a Junior First Class member of the Green Battalion in the series Go! Go! Loser Ranger!, known for being one of the few characters who discovers the true identity of Combatant D. She is a young girl with green eyes and long, light brown or blonde hair, parts of which are tied into two high pigtails while the rest falls freely. Her most distinctive feature is her choice of attire: she always wears a black sailor-style school uniform over her standard Green Battalion uniform, despite not actually attending any school.
As a person, Kanon presents a tough and apathetic exterior. She has a famously short temper, frequently complains about things being a pain, and often wears an angry or frustrated expression. Her personality is brusque and impatient, resembling a delinquent in her mannerisms. However, this harsh facade is a defense mechanism that masks deep psychological scars. At the age of eight, her family was killed and her home destroyed during a monster attack. She was rescued from the rubble by a ranger cadet named Sōjirō Ishikawa, who would later comfort her in the park during her difficult childhood. After being taken in by the family of her friend Sayaka Komuro, a traumatic incident occurred when she assaulted a member of the Monster Protection Association who attempted to preach sympathy for monsters. Realizing she could no longer live a normal life, she asked Sōjirō to help her join the Ranger Force. At only ten years old, she became the youngest ranger in history to pass the entrance exam and join the organization.
Kanon is driven by a deep-seated hatred for the monsters who destroyed her family and for any humans who support them. While she usually suppresses her emotions behind a rough and impatient attitude, this hatred surfaces with intense determination and aggressiveness during combat. Despite this, she has found a sense of belonging and pride in her work with the Green Battalion. She cares deeply for her fellow squad members, both past and present, and feels a strong sense of camaraderie with them. Beneath her tough exterior, she also harbors a nostalgic longing for the ordinary school life she was denied. Her decision to wear a sailor uniform, even as a ranger, is a reflection of this desire for a common, peaceful existence.
In the story, Kanon serves as the immediate superior to Hibiki Sakurama, who is secretly Combatant D in disguise, and to Angel Usukubo. She holds a deep appreciation for her own superior, the Green Keeper Chidori, trusting him completely and proudly defending the Green Battalion's strength against outside criticism. Her most significant relationship is with Combatant D. During a battle against the executive Magatia, she witnessed D transform and learned his true identity as a monster. Although she was subjected to brainwashing to make her forget, she either resisted the effect or pretended to have forgotten intentionally. Instead of reporting him, she chooses to keep his secret, driven by curiosity and a trust that develops between them as they share dangerous missions. Despite her hatred for monsters, she does not extend that hatred to D, and their bond grows into a strange but strong alliance founded on mutual recognition of each other's true natures. She maintains a friendly and informal rapport with her colleagues, often speaking to them casually, and feels a personal sense of loss over not being able to recruit Sōjirō Ishikawa to her squad before his death in battle.
Over the course of the narrative, Kanon shows significant development. Her journey forces her to confront her past trauma and her black-and-white worldview. Her decision to protect D’s identity represents a major step, as she begins to question the absolute nature of the conflict between rangers and monsters. During a battle with Magatia, who trapped her in a school-like illusion, Kanon was able to see through the spell and fully recall D's true form upon being rescued. After this experience, she symbolically abandons her original sailor uniform and accepts a new one lent by her friend Noa Hagino, marking a personal transformation and a move away from her idealized past. In later conflicts, she even fights alongside D as a true partner, recognizing a common enemy in the Death Messiahs despite the secrets that still lie between them.
Kanon possesses several notable abilities that make her a formidable fighter. She has a unique physiology that allows her to swallow items and later regurgitate them freely, a skill she uses to conceal weapons inside her body. She is highly proficient with multiple small, special daggers, which are smaller versions of the standard Dragon Gadget, and she can deploy them from her mouth in combat. Her most powerful tool is a replica of a divine treasure called Ukemochi no Kami. This object takes the form of a mask that covers the lower half of her face, granting her the ability to bite through and destroy virtually anything, including physical matter and even space itself. The activation cartridges for this treasure are also typically hidden within her body. While this power has tremendous lethal potential, Kanon adheres to a personal principle, refusing to use it against innocent humans and reserving its full destructive force for monsters or humans aligned with them. Her combat skills are extraordinary, allowing her to easily overpower grown enemies and trainees despite her youth and small stature.
