TV-Series
Description
Karim Flam serves as a lieutenant of the Special Fire Force Company 1, where he also holds the position of a priest within the Holy Sol Temple. He is a young man of 22 years, born on December 12, with a height of 178.5 centimeters and AB blood type. His appearance is defined by short, straight dark grey hair brushed forward with shaved sides, and small dark eyes that often convey an irritated or lazy expression. Instead of standard bunker gear, he wears a dark cassock beneath a light, high-collared overcoat, a cross-shaped pendant, and is frequently seen with headphones, carrying musical instruments into combat.
Karim Flam has a serious and cautious personality, often appearing blunt or distant, especially towards strangers, which can result in him making insulting remarks. A distinctive trait is his peculiar way of speaking, where he has a habit of repeating the same phrase using different words, which can make communication confusing. Despite a somewhat brash and easily annoyed exterior, he is deeply loyal and protective of his comrades, strictly adheres to Company 1 protocol, and demonstrates strong leadership skills. His sense of justice ultimately outweighs his personal feelings, making him willing to confront even his closest friends if they cross a line.
As a Second Generation pyrokinetic, his ignition ability is known as thermoacoustic refrigeration. This unique technique allows him to absorb ambient heat energy using a specialized wind instrument, converting it into sound waves which rapidly lowers the temperature to generate ice. While his power is often mistaken for cryokinesis, it is fundamentally an advanced application of fire control through heat-sound energy conversion. The process is similar to the principle behind how a refrigerator or air conditioner works. He carries a secondary bell instrument that produces alarming noises to aid in heat absorption, and his control over the ice is so precise that he can leave air pockets within it to allow trapped individuals to breathe.
Karim Flam shares a deep, loyal bond with his childhood friends, Rekka Hoshimiya and Foien Li. His role in the story becomes crucial during the investigation into the artificial Infernal incidents. When new recruits like Shinra Kusakabe and Arthur Boyle are assigned to him during a probationary period, he tests their integrity by planting a bug capable of creating Infernals in his desk. This leads to the revelation that his old friend Rekka is the traitor creating artificial Infernals for the White-Clad. When Karim confronts Rekka, he uses his ability to freeze and immobilize him to prevent further harm. However, Rekka is assassinated by snipers from the White-Clad before he can be brought to justice. During this attack, Foien Li sacrifices his forearm to save Karim from a fatal shot.
The death of Rekka serves as a major turning point for Karim Flam. Haunted by the loss and feeling a sense of guilt and failure for not seeing his friend's dark intentions, he resolves to uncover the truth behind the Evangelist and the White-Clad. This motivates him to formally ally with Company 8, led by Captain Akitaru Ōbi, sharing sensitive intelligence and collaborating on joint missions despite the bureaucratic constraints of his own company. His development continues as he attends high-level strategic meetings regarding the Adolla Burst phenomenon and participates in dangerous investigations, such as the infiltration of St. Raffles Convent. There, he helps uncover a hidden laboratory where experiments were conducted using Fire Bugs to create doppelgangers and pyrokinetics, leading to a confrontation with Sister Sumire, who destroys his instrument and incapacitates him.
