Description
Hitoshi Amaya is a central character in the anime, serving as the roommate and classmate of the protagonist, Kazushige Sanda. He is a student at Daikoku Welfare Academy, a middle school in a near-future Japan. Amaya is often nicknamed "Pretty Boy" by those around him due to his feminine facial features and impeccably styled hair.

Initially, Amaya comes across as an antagonist. After witnessing Sanda transform into Santa Claus when their science laboratory was destroyed, Amaya secretly observes him. In a later confrontation, he subdues Sanda and ties him to a chair in order to question him. During this encounter, Amaya displays a calculating, mischievous, and manipulative side, admitting that he enjoys having control over others and teasing Sanda by referring to his Santa form as "grandpa". Despite this antagonistic introduction, his personality is more complex. He is shown to be pragmatic and driven, and he can be sincere, particularly when revealing his true motivations.

Amaya's primary motivation is rooted in his family's struggling cake shop. He explains that with Japan's failing economy, his family's business is on the verge of closing. He believes that if the legend of Santa Claus were proven to be true, it would revitalize Christmas celebrations, leading to a surge in sales for his family's shop, much like in the past. This desire to save his family's livelihood is what initially compels him to get involved with Sanda.

Within the story, Amaya serves as one of the few people who knows Sanda's secret identity. He forms a core part of the main trio, alongside Sanda and their classmate Shiori Fuyumura. While his relationship with Sanda begins with blackmail and distrust, it evolves into a genuine, if complicated, friendship. He promises to keep Sanda's secret in exchange for the Santa Claus's protection and favor. The two share a dynamic where Amaya often teases Sanda, even dubbing his transformed state "Sand-pa," but he also shows deep concern for his friend's wellbeing. This concern reaches a peak when Amaya attempts to end their friendship out of a sincere belief that distancing himself is the only way to protect Sanda from the dangerous adults hunting for Santa Claus. Sanda rejects this decision, and their bond is ultimately reaffirmed when Amaya rushes to save Sanda from a dangerous situation. Amaya also has a complex relationship with Fuyumura; after his initial antagonism leads to a violent confrontation where she pins him to a ledge, he eventually comes to trust her as an ally.

Throughout the series, Amaya undergoes noticeable development. He transitions from a seemingly selfish antagonist who exploits Sanda's secret for personal gain to a loyal and protective friend, willing to sacrifice their closeness for the sake of Sanda's safety. His actions become driven less by personal profit and more by a desire to support his allies against the corrupt adult authorities of the academy.

Regarding notable abilities, Amaya does not possess supernatural powers like Sanda. His strengths are more practical. He is observant and resourceful, having deduced Sanda's secret identity on his own. He also demonstrates a willingness to use non-lethal weapons, such as a taser, to gain the upper hand in a confrontation.
