Description
Chibi is a small, round, and utterly endearing creature known as a temari kappa, a low-ranking and generally harmless type of spirit. His name, which literally means small or runt, aptly describes his diminutive stature and unassuming nature. He is a very weak spirit, but what he lacks in power, he more than makes up for in loyalty and affection, particularly for the human chef Aoi Tsubaki.

Before coming to the Hidden Realm, Chibi lived in the human world with a group of other kappa. Life was difficult for him there, as his companions often stole his share of food, leaving him hungry more often than not. His fortune changed when Aoi, a human with the ability to see spirits, began to regularly feed him and his friends, with cucumbers being a particular favorite. This simple act of kindness forged a deep, unwavering bond between them, with Aoi becoming a nurturing, almost mother-like figure to the lonely little spirit.

When Aoi was taken to the Hidden Realm of Kakuriyo, Chibi was left behind. His companions, finding the food supply gone, abandoned him to search for other sustenance. Alone and hungry, he eventually found his way back to Aoi when she made a brief return to the human world. Overjoyed at their reunion, he refused to be parted from her again and secretly followed her back to the inn at Tenjin-ya, becoming her self-proclaimed companion and familiar. Since then, he sticks to her side constantly, motivated by his love for her cooking and his desire to be near the person who showed him such compassion.

Despite his small size and low status, Chibi possesses a surprising amount of courage and a strong sense of right and wrong. He is incredibly friendly and will take a liking to most people he meets, often overcoming his own initial fears to do so. For instance, he was initially frightened by the fearsome tengu, Nobunaga, but eventually won over the dog-like spirit and became his friend. His most notable display of bravery comes from his fierce loyalty to Aoi; he does not hesitate to confront much larger and more powerful spirits, such as Raijuu, if they dare to insult Aoi or her cooking. This protective instinct shows that his devotion is driven by genuine affection, not just a desire for food.

Chibi plays a small but vital role as a source of emotional support and occasional, unexpected assistance. He is often seen perched on Aoi's shoulder or hiding in her pocket as she goes about her work. His ability to go unnoticed allows him to act as her eyes and ears. This resourcefulness has proven crucial more than once, such as when he stowed away in Aoi's pocket after she was taken to a rival inn and then bribed a guard with food to obtain the key to her cell. In another significant event, his unique perception helped Aoi discover the true nature of the lonely, fearsome Umi-bouzu, revealing it to be a depressed child-like spirit and leading to a ceremony that brought it great happiness.

Having experienced abandonment and hunger himself, Chibi has a deep, instinctive understanding of the struggles weaker spirits face in a world dominated by the powerful. This experience grants him a subtle but important form of insight. His character shows minimal dramatic development as the story progresses, as his primary role is as a loyal, static companion. However, his presence is a constant reminder of Aoi's inherent kindness and her unique ability to touch the hearts of the ayakashi she encounters. His most notable abilities are not combative but are tied to his cleverness, his capacity for bribery using small bits of food, his talent for finding hiding places, and his empathetic insight into the vulnerability of other spirits.
