Description
Jûji Yusurube is a student at the prestigious Rashomon Academy and a classmate of the main protagonist, Shiki Ichinose. He is a young man of average height with green hair and eyes, typically seen wearing glasses and the standard school uniform. Adding to his demonic heritage, he possesses a pair of horns that curve backward from his head with a slight upward turn at the ends.
On the surface, Jûji presents himself as a serious, diligent, and cooperative individual who is committed to self-improvement and values teamwork. He strives to be reliable and useful to his peers, often acting as a peacemaker in tense situations. However, this earnest exterior conceals a significant hidden side. He is an extremely lecherous young man who frequently makes inappropriate and sexually suggestive remarks, particularly to his female classmate Homare Byobugaura. His perversion is a source of comic relief, as he openly fantasizes about unrealistic scenarios, such as going on a "uniform date" that ends with him losing his virginity, and expresses intense jealousy toward his classmate Rokuro Kiriyama for receiving attention from another female student, Kuina Sazanami. His voice actor notes that while Jûji appears cool and serious at first glance, he hides this "naughty" and "lecherous" aspect of his personality, which makes him a fun character to portray.
Beneath this contradictory demeanor lies a tragic and heavy past. Jûji is a half-demon, born to a demon mother and a human father, and lives with his frail younger sister, Fumino, in the Suginami Ward of Tokyo. His primary motivation and driving force is his deep, devoted love for his sister, for whom he would do anything to protect and provide medical care. It is this devotion that led him to become a spy for the Momotaro Organization, the primary antagonistic force that hunts demons. In exchange for his sister's treatment, he agreed to infiltrate Rashomon Academy and act as an informant for a handler named Ukyo Momogiwa, to whom he feels a great deal of gratitude and respect for supposedly taking care of his family. Despite his friendly demeanor, this mission reveals a ruthless side capable of betraying and sacrificing his comrades if it means saving his sister.
Jûji's role in the story is that of a major supporting character whose arc is central to the emotional weight of the narrative. Initially serving as a reliable, if perverted, teammate for Shiki in missions ranging from the Kyoto branch to the Kegon Falls Ruins, he is later forced to follow through on his mission as a traitor. This leads him to kidnap Shiki and deliver him to the Momotaro Organization. His key relationships are severely tested by this betrayal. His bond with Shiki Ichinose, who refuses to abandon him even after learning the truth, becomes a cornerstone of his eventual redemption. He shares a complex camaraderie with his roommate Naito Mudano, who provides emotional support when Jûji feels inferior to other warriors, and a suspicion-filled dynamic with Jin Kougasaki, who is the first to see through his act. However, the most profound relationship is with the illusion of his sister, Fumino. The heartbreaking truth, which Jûji eventually learns, is that she has been dead for a significant amount of time, and Ukyo has been using a brainwashing ability to make him believe she is still alive. This revelation causes Jûji to spiral into a violent, despairing frenzy, forcing his comrades to fight to bring him back to safety and sanity. This traumatic event marks his lowest point and the beginning of his struggle for redemption and to break free from Ukyo's control.
In terms of abilities, Jûji specializes in reconnaissance rather than direct combat. Using Blood Eclipse Release, his powers derive from manipulating his own blood. His primary technique is Whither Goest Thou, where by dropping blood on a spot, he can detect all living beings within a five-kilometer radius and, with training, even distinguish between humans and Momotaro. However, this ability has limitations: he cannot move while it is active, it has a fifteen-minute cooldown, and it struggles to distinguish targets in multi-story buildings due to its bird's-eye perspective. He also develops a refined, short-range technique called Thou Art There, which allows for three-dimensional scanning of a twenty-five meter radius without the long cooldown, making it a powerful secret trump card for infiltration. Through rigorous training, he learns to perceive people's emotional states, such as agitation or fear, as colors within his scanning field, making him an invaluable source of intelligence for his team. Despite joking about using his powers for voyeurism, his pursuit of precision in his abilities is driven by a genuine desire to be useful in support missions.
