Description
Giulio Gandini is a major original character from the anime film My Hero Academia: You're Next, serving as a central figure whose journey is intertwined with the movie's plot. A European man of average build, he has brownish-red hair tied back in a short ponytail, thin greenish-blue eyes, and sharp, shark-like teeth with a mole under his left eye. His appearance has been drastically altered by a violent past; he has lost his right eye, right arm, and left leg, which have been replaced with black, mechanical prosthetics. He typically conceals his right eye socket, which bears scarring, beneath an eyepatch. His butler’s attire—a black tailcoat, grey vest, and tie—is adapted to expose his prosthetic limbs, underscoring his transformation from a domestic servant into a battle-hardened combatant.
Before the events of the film, Giulio was an orphan taken in by the head of the wealthy Scervino family. His primary role was to serve as a personal butler to the family's daughter, Anna Scervino, but his function was far more critical than typical servitude. Giulio possesses a Quirk called Neutralization, which allows him to temporarily nullify another person's Quirk factor by touching them with his right arm. This ability was the reason he was hired; Anna's own Quirk, Overmodification, could amplify the abilities of those she touched but was always active and caused her immense, constant pain and dangerous seizures. Giulio dedicated himself to using his Quirk to suppress hers, allowing her to live a somewhat normal life. Over time, he grew deeply devoted to Anna, finding gratitude and purpose in his work despite being bound to her side. However, as Anna's Quirk grew stronger with age, reaching the point of Quirk Singularity, even Giulio's Neutralization began to falter. Tormented by her condition, Anna made him swear a solemn and tragic promise: to kill her if she ever lost control completely and became a threat to others.
Giulio's calm, collected, and outwardly polite demeanor masks a much darker and more hardened personality forged by tragedy. In the past, he was kinder and more openly warm, but the attack that changed his life also transformed him. The Gollini Mafia Family, seeking to exploit Anna's power, slaughtered the Scervino household and kidnapped her. Giulio was left for dead, crushed under rubble, which resulted in the loss of his right arm, left leg, and right eye. Having rebuilt himself with support-item prosthetics, he became a grim, relentless pursuer. He is fiercely pragmatic and can be startlingly ruthless, seeing little value in those who get in his way. When he first encounters Izuku Midoriya, he coldly suggests the young hero could be useful as a human shield. He holds a deeply cynical view of both Heroes and Villains, whom he sees as hypocrites who ultimately care nothing for fragile people like Anna. His single-minded mission is to find Anna and fulfill his promise to end her suffering, an act he believes is an act of mercy, even as it torments him.
His role in the story is as a conflicted anti-hero and temporary ally to the students of U.A. High. He tracks the Gollini family to a chaotic, post-war Japan, aiming to intercept them and kill Anna, whom they are using as a power source for their villainous leader, Valdo Gollini, who calls himself Dark Might. Izuku Midoriya repeatedly thwarts his assassination attempts, not out of malice but because he believes there must be another way to save Anna. This creates a tense dynamic where Giulio views Izuku as a naive hypocrite, while Izuku sees past Giulio's cold exterior to the devoted protector within. Giulio's key relationship is, of course, with Anna Scervino, his devotion to her being the sole driving force behind all his actions. He also forms a significant, if reluctant, bond with Izuku, who becomes the first person to genuinely challenge his fatalistic worldview and offer an alternative to the grim promise he made.
Throughout the film, Giulio undergoes significant development. Initially presented as a ruthless killer resolved to a dark duty, he is a man who has closed his heart to hope. His interactions with Izuku, who risks his life to save Anna despite having no personal stake, slowly chip away at his cynicism. The pivotal moment occurs when Izuku, seeing Giulio's most cherished dream under a hypnotic Quirk, calls out to him, proving that someone truly understands his pain and wants to help. This act of empathy allows Giulio to break free and ultimately accept a different solution. In the final battle, he embraces Anna, and his long-dormant Quirk is reignited by her power, evolving to permanently neutralize her volatile abilities. By saving her instead of killing her, he completes his promise in a way he never thought possible, finally allowing himself to smile and agree to stay by her side.
In terms of abilities, despite the loss of his original Quirk due to his missing right arm, Giulio is a formidable and resourceful combatant. His military training is evident in his tactical thinking and proficiency with firearms. His prosthetics themselves are powerful support items. His right arm transforms into a pistol with a reloadable magazine, his primary weapon. His artificial left leg contains a jet booster, and his right eye is a high-tech scanner that can identify targets. He is an expert marksman and a highly skilled driver, piloting a customized, armored motorcycle equipped with its own weapons and defense systems, which serves as his primary mode of transport and a mobile weapons platform. Though he cannot use his Neutralization Quirk for most of the film, by the climax, after being affected by Anna's power, his ability returns in an even stronger, permanent form, capable of nullifying Quirks without the need for physical touch from his right arm.
