Cody Hida, known initially in Japanese media as Iori Hida, serves as a central figure in the Digimon Adventure continuity. His childhood was marked by trauma when his father, police officer Hiroki Hida, died protecting others during a 1999 assignment in London. Cody traveled to London with his mother and grandfather to recover his father's remains. On their return flight to Tokyo, August 3, 1999, the aircraft encountered Kuwagamon but was saved by MegaKabuterimon and Garudamon, providing Cody's first indirect experience with Digimon.
Relocating to an Odaiba apartment complex sometime before 2002, Cody befriended neighbor Yolei Inoue. In 2002, he received a D-3 Digivice, officially joining the DigiDestined alongside Davis Motomiya, Yolei, and later Ken Ichijouji. Partnered with Armadillomon, Cody obtained the Digi-Eggs of Knowledge and Reliability, reflecting his curiosity about human behavior and his unwavering commitment to honesty and duty. Despite being the youngest, he displayed notable seriousness and maturity, heavily influenced by his kendo master grandfather, who became his primary paternal figure.
Throughout Digimon Adventure 02, Cody's development focused on reconciling his rigid black-and-white worldview with moral complexities. Early episodes highlighted struggles with self-doubt and inflexibility. During an oil platform crisis, he lied to secure Joe Kido's help, later questioning his worthiness of the Digi-Egg of Reliability. Joe's reassurance that a single white lie for the greater good didn't negate his reliability allowed Armadillomon to Armor Digivolve into Submarimon. Another significant arc involved his initial refusal to forgive Ken for his actions as the Digimon Emperor. This conflict endangered the team during BlackWarGreymon's attacks, but Cody gradually softened, fully accepting Ken by attending his Christmas party in December 2002.
Cody's role expanded during DNA Digivolution. Recognizing T.K. Takaishi's unresolved trauma from past battles, Cody sought insight from T.K.'s brother, Matt. This understanding facilitated the DNA Digivolution of Ankylomon and Angemon into Shakkoumon. Later, battling the Daemon Corps, Shakkoumon destroyed MarineDevimon to protect a hospital, forcing Cody to confront the ethical weight of killing a sentient being, an act that deeply unsettled him.
His father's legacy became pivotal near the series' end. Cody learned Hiroki and antagonist Yukio Oikawa had discovered the Digital World as children, vowing to visit it together, a dream thwarted by Hiroki's death. During MaloMyotismon's illusion, Cody's greatest desire—to show the Digital World to his father—was shattered by Armadillomon's intervention. In the aftermath, Cody aided the dying Oikawa, witnessing his transformation into digital butterflies that healed the Digital World.
In Digimon Adventure tri. (2005), the 12-year-old Cody was defeated alongside Davis, Yolei, and Ken by Alphamon while uncovering Yggdrasill's plans. The group was hospitalized in a comatose state until Daigo Nishijima sacrificed himself to return them to the Real World; they recovered three months later.
By Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna (2010), Cody was a taller, more adult-looking high school sophomore. He studied rigorously for law school entrance exams and continued kendo as a club activity, maintaining his commitment to justice, reliability, and his partnership with Armadillomon. During the Eosmon crisis, Cody assisted Matt's investigation into antagonist Menoa Bellucci by performing background checks in New York with other 02 members.
The 02 epilogue (2028) depicted Cody as a defense attorney. He married, had a daughter partnered with an Upamon, and his career embodied his lifelong values of justice and integrity.
