Jō Kido, known as Joe Kido in English-language materials, serves as a central character throughout the Digimon Adventure continuity, appearing in Digimon Adventure, Digimon Adventure 02, Digimon Adventure tri., and Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna. As the oldest original DigiDestined, he partners with the marine mammal Digimon Gomamon and holds the Crest of Sincerity (localized as Reliability or Honesty in some regions). His story consistently navigates responsibility, academic pressures, and personal growth.
Born into the Kido family's strong medical tradition, Jō faces intense pressure to become a doctor. His father and older brothers—Shin (a medical intern) and Shuu (an anthropology student)—fuel expectations that clash with his severe hemophobia, creating internal conflict. He initially pursues medicine out of familial duty to avoid disappointing his father.
At age eleven during his first Digital World adventure, Jō struggles with anxiety and control, constantly seeking adult guidance. His self-imposed protector role leads to reckless actions like confronting Unimon alone. These experiences hone his reliability, demonstrated when he saves Takeru from drowning or applies first aid and astronomy knowledge. Gomamon’s teasing initially exposes Jō’s insecurities, but mutual trust strengthens their bond, with Gomamon urging courage over caution.
By Digimon Adventure 02, Jō is fifteen and mellower but retains his clumsiness and ever-present first aid kit. He mentors Crest heir Iori Hida (Cody) and supports younger DigiDestined against threats like MaloMyotismon. He sacrifices his Crest power to free the Four Holy Beasts, temporarily limiting Gomamon’s evolution. He declares his intent to become a Digimon doctor, merging medical goals with Digital World ties.
In Digimon Adventure tri., eighteen-year-old Jō prioritizes medical studies over DigiDestined duties, causing tension with Gomamon that peaks in the Digimon’s temporary departure. Jō later reconciles by committing to both his partner and career, acknowledging medicine’s potential for Digimon.
Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna shows twenty-three-year-old Jō as a medical intern wearing scrubs, a white coat, gold-framed glasses, and a black watch. When Gomamon fakes an injury, Jō’s hemophobia resurfaces, but he overcomes it to treat Gomamon after a real truck accident, cementing his dedication to healing humans and Digimon.
During the 2010 Eosmon crisis, Jō treats comatose Mimi at his hospital and briefs the team. Succumbing to Eosmon, he regresses to childhood in Menoa Bellucci’s "Never Land" illusion. Freed by Taichi using Hikari’s whistle, he joins the final battle. The film concludes with his separation from Gomamon due to adulthood, mirroring Taichi and Yamato’s fates.
An epilogue reveals Jō becomes the first dedicated Digimon doctor by 2017. Around 2027, he reunites with Gomamon, marries, and has a son partnered with Pukamon. Despite professional success, he occasionally faints at blood (e.g., treating Orgemon), while Gomamon remains a supportive family presence.
