Description
Kyoka Izumi is a 14-year-old member of the Armed Detective Agency, previously an assassin for the Port Mafia. Her parents worked as professional assassins and were killed during a targeted attack when she was young. Her mother, the original wielder of the ability Demon Snow, used it to end both her own life and her husband’s at his request so that their daughter would not be harmed or forced to kill them. In the chaos, the ability was transferred to Kyoka’s mobile phone instead of directly to her, leaving her unable to command it by her own will. Orphaned and taken in by the Port Mafia, she was molded into a ruthless operative who killed 35 people in six months without displaying emotion or hesitation.

Before her defection, Kyoka’s personality was hollow and doll-like, utterly detached and obedient. After being exposed to Atsushi Nakajima’s kindness and the everyday world outside the mafia, she begins to adopt a quieter, still reserved but genuinely gentle disposition. She displays a strong protective instinct, particularly toward Atsushi, and though she rarely speaks much, she shows a quiet boldness when necessary. Simple things fascinate her: rabbits, tofu, hydrangea, crepes, and any small cute object. She is easily startled by thunder and holds a deep aversion to flies and dogs. Underneath her calm exterior, she carries significant trauma and battles feelings of worthlessness, yet she insists on proving she is more than a killer.

Her motivation is rooted in a desire to find hope, stop taking lives, and earn a place where she can belong without being defined by her past. She yearns to atone and to protect, no longer as a weapon but as someone who can care for others and appreciate ordinary existence.

Kyoka first appears as an antagonist sent to bomb a train, but after failing the mission she attempts to take her own life. Atsushi saves her, and this catalyses her defection from the Port Mafia. She is then taken in by the Armed Detective Agency, with Atsushi shouldering responsibility for her. As a member, she undertakes field missions, frequently paired with Atsushi, and proves herself a dependable ally. Her role expands from a supporting character to a more central figure who contributes both in combat and through her perceptiveness, often recalling mission details with a photographic memory and navigating stealth tasks with precision.

Her most significant relationship is with Atsushi Nakajima, who becomes her savior, housemate, and the person she most fervently wishes to protect. She holds deep respect for him and often stays close by his side. Within the Agency, she is guided by Yukichi Fukuzawa, who alleviates the limitation of her ability and helps her gain true control. Her former supervisor in the Port Mafia, Kouyou Ozaki, raised her as a protégé and displays a complex, almost maternal care for her despite their opposing paths. Toward Ryuunosuke Akutagawa she is resolute, determined to demonstrate that she has moved beyond being a mere tool for murder.

Kyoka’s development is marked by a gradual emotional thaw. Initially a blank instrument, she rediscovers simple joys, from tasting food to keeping a rabbit keychain. Her self-image shifts from that of a condemned sinner to someone willing to live. A crucial milestone is mastering her ability without depending on the phone, which represents reclaiming agency over the very power that once felt like a curse. Over time, she grows more vocal, more willing to laugh, and more assertive in defending her new life, all while acknowledging the weight of her past without letting it consume her.

Her ability, Demon Snow, manifests as a tall, sword-wielding phantom creature. Originally bound to the mobile phone inherited from her mother, it would only obey commands issued through a call. After Fukuzawa’s intervention, Kyoka becomes able to direct Demon Snow with her own voice and will, significantly increasing her combat effectiveness. Even before this, she was a highly trained swordswoman and close-quarters combatant, able to hold her own without relying on her ability. Together, her skill and Demon Snow make her a formidable fighter, now dedicated to protecting Yokohama rather than spilling blood.
