Description
Gustav Montagnés is a significant supporting character from the narrative arc set in the Roble Holy Kingdom. He serves as a deputy commander of the Paladin Order, functioning as a crucial, grounded counterpart to the order’s more volatile leader, Remedios Custodio.

In appearance, Gustav is a middle-aged man with light-grayish brown hair and a small goatee on his chin. As a paladin, he shares his order’s inherent disgust for the undead. Unlike his superior, however, he is capable of remaining composed and diplomatic when the situation requires it. His defining personality trait is a deep-seated practicality and realism. He is able to navigate complex situations where there is no clear right or wrong, and is willing to employ tactics like deceit or sacrifice the few to save the many if it serves the greater good of his nation.

His motivations are rooted in his patriotism and a strong sense of duty. He desires to learn divine magic, a personal goal stemming from a wish to heal his chronic stomach cramps, which are a constant source of discomfort. Gustav also has a softer side, keeping two small rabbit-like creatures called Bunnia as pets in his home, which he finds to be a great comfort and a way to relieve stress.

Gustav’s role in the story is primarily that of an adviser, strategist, and diplomat. Following the demi-human invasion and the fall of the northern Holy Kingdom, he survives the initial battle and joins the Holy Kingdom Liberation Army. He, alongside Remedios and Neia Baraja, travels as an envoy to seek aid from the Re-Estize Kingdom and later the Sorcerer Kingdom. During negotiations with the Sorcerer King Ainz Ooal Gown, Gustav does most of the talking, attempting to secure military support. He is often the voice of reason, desperately trying to manage the fallout from Remedios’s impulsive and emotionally driven actions.

His key relationships are central to his character development. As Remedios’s trusted lieutenant, he acts as her anchor, constantly keeping her emotions in check and compensating for her lack of political tact. This responsibility puts him under immense stress, a factor to which his stomach problems are frequently attributed. Their relationship deteriorates over the course of the liberation campaign due to their conflicting stances on leadership. Remedios stubbornly clings to an ideal of saving everyone, a legacy of the Holy Queen, while Gustav understands that some sacrifices are necessary for victory. He is shown to be protective of Neia, often taking her side or comforting her after she is berated by Remedios.

Gustav undergoes significant development, transitioning from a conflicted officer to a hardened pragmatist. He is initially uncomfortable with underhanded tactics but his patriotism eventually wins over his sense of traditional justice. He grows weary of Remedios’s unrealistic expectations publicly and directly challenges her strategy, advocating for a new, more pragmatic approach that prioritizes the survival of the many over the few. He becomes increasingly concerned with public perception, noting that the Sorcerer King’s victories have made him more trustworthy and revered than the paladins themselves. He worries about the political ramifications, including the possibility of the kingdom being annexed. After the war, Prince Caspond Bessarez plans to have Gustav replace Remedios as the Grandmaster of the Paladin Order, a testament to his proven leadership and realistic worldview.

In terms of notable abilities, Gustav is not described as a top-tier swordsman. He is considered an average fighter with the blade, and it is noted that he lacks the outstanding sword skills of his fellow deputy commander. Nevertheless, he is still stronger than the average paladin. His true strengths lie in his leadership, charisma, and strategic mind. He excels at commanding troops, coordinating strategies, and handling diplomatic matters. His class levels include Paladin, Holy Knight, and Charisma, reflecting his focus on command and influence rather than pure martial prowess.
