Description
Brad Coleman is a police officer working for the magical law enforcement in his world. His career began in the special security force directly under the Magic Bureau before he transferred to the magical police force, where he continued to demonstrate his skill. On the job, he has been credited with the notable feat of driving off a dragon, an accomplishment that contributes to his reputation as a capable and formidable officer.

Physically, Brad is a middle-aged man with a muscular build. He stands at 178 centimeters tall and weighs 88 kilograms. His hair is typically slicked back, and he often has a stubble of facial hair, contributing to his tough appearance. He is frequently seen smoking. A distinctive feature is a scar or mark located below his left eye, which runs down about the length of his nose. His standard attire is the dark blue suit of the Magic Police uniform. The color of his hair was depicted in official material as light brown, but the anime adaptation portrays it as blonde.

Initially, Brad presents a stern and no-nonsense attitude, particularly when it comes to enforcing the law. He is depicted as being strict and unsympathetic toward those who are unable to use magic well, a reflection of the deeply discriminatory society of his world. For much of his early interaction with non-magical individuals, he shows little compassion. However, his personality is not one-dimensional; he displays a pragmatic and even somewhat corrupt side. He is shown to willingly take out his stress on convicts by beating them, and his primary motivation for capturing Mash Burnedead is for personal gain and career advancement.

Brad's role in the story is pivotal as the catalyst for the main plot. He discovers Mash Burnedead, a boy with no magic marks, living in secret with his adoptive father, Regro. Seeing this as an opportunity to make it big, Brad storms their home and detains Regro, torturing him with magical restraints to force Mash out of hiding. When Mash returns and confronts him, Brad attempts to use his magic to subdue the boy. He casts Nalcompas, a purple offensive magic bullet, and its more powerful variant, Nalcompas Diagorus. Despite being spells reportedly strong enough to drive off a dragon, Mash easily deflects them with his bare hands. In a final, enraged barrage, Brad casts numerous magical orbs, which Mash simply plays with. Mash then borrows his father’s wand and throws it like a dart, bringing Brad to his knees and cutting his cheek. Defeated and seeing the futility of further action, Brad proposes a deal instead of continuing the fight. He offers to provide Mash with a fake magic mark and help him enroll at Easton Magic Academy. In exchange, Mash must become a Divine Visionary, the most prestigious student of the year. Brad would then receive the money and prestige that come with the title, and in return, he would ensure that Mash and Regro are no longer hunted. Mash agrees to this plan, setting the series' events into motion.

Following this agreement, Brad's motivations evolve. He becomes an unexpected ally to the Burnedeads. He takes great personal risk by helping a non-magical person, given the severe discrimination against them in magical society. Because of this, his actions, which may have initially stemmed from selfishness, ultimately portray him as a surprisingly kind individual within the context of his harsh world. He and Regro, the man he was torturing, develop a strange and enduring friendship. They are frequently seen together in later scenes, sharing everyday moments such as sitting around a campfire, drinking tea, and discussing Mash's progress from a distance. He continues to watch over Mash with genuine concern and provides support where he can.

His key relationship is with the Burnedead family. With Mash, his respect for the young man's strength and determination grows after their initial confrontation. With Regro, what begins as a violent interrogation turns into a deep and trusting bond; fanbook information notes that his favorite way to spend holidays has shifted from going to bars to having tea with Regro. He is also shown fighting alongside other mages to assist Mash in later conflicts against powerful adversaries.

In terms of abilities, Brad wields a wand and his magic power is noted to be greater than that of lower-ranked officers. As the story identifies him as a single-liner, his amount of magic power is considered average compared to elite mages, but he is a proficient and skilled combatant nonetheless. His signature spells are Nalcompas and Nalcompas Diagorus. He can also create magic restraints for capturing or torturing targets, form circular magic barriers for defense, and use a bird made of magical energy for tracking. His combat effectiveness, however, is rendered completely useless against Mash's superhuman physical strength, which easily breaks through his barriers and deflects his most powerful attacks.
