Description
Eijirō Kirishima is a student in Class 1-A at U.A. High School, where he is training to become a professional hero under the hero name Red Riot. Born on October 16, he is fifteen years old at the start of the series and stands 170 centimeters tall. His appearance is notable for his bright red hair, which is spiked up into sharp points resembling small horns, and his red eyes. The red hair is a dye job he adopted upon entering U.A. High School; his natural hair color is black. He also has a small scar above his right eye, which he accidentally gave himself when his Quirk first manifested at the age of three. His hero costume is a deep red outfit with gear-like shoulder pieces and a mask, designed with exposed skin to prevent his Quirk from shredding fabric.
Kirishima has a boisterous, extroverted, and friendly personality, making him one of the most sociable and well-liked students in his class. He operates by a personal code centered on the concept of manliness, which for him means bravery, living without regret, and having an unwavering resolve to protect others. He is easily moved to tears by displays of courage or integrity and is quick to offer his admiration and friendship to those he finds noble or determined. Despite his tough exterior, he is deeply honest and kind-hearted, and he often struggles with insecurities regarding his own strength and the perceived plainness of his Quirk. These feelings of inadequacy stem from an incident in middle school. He once gave up on his dream of becoming a hero after witnessing his childhood friend Mina Ashido bravely confront a threatening figure while he stood by, frozen in fear.
His motivations are rooted in this past failure. He was inspired to try again by the words and example of the retro pro hero Crimson Riot, whose philosophy of fearless heroism became a guiding light for him. This admiration is why he took the hero name Red Riot and dyed his hair red, both as a tribute and as a symbolic rejection of his weaker former self. His primary drive is to become a hero who can act without hesitation, serving as an unbreakable shield for those in need. He is particularly known for his fierce loyalty to his friends. He became one of the first and closest friends to Katsuki Bakugo, being one of the few people unbothered by Bakugo's explosive temper and able to earn his respect. This bond was so strong that Kirishima was instrumental in the mission to rescue Bakugo after he was kidnapped by villains. He is also very close with Denki Kaminari, and he has a friendly rivalry with Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu from Class 1-B, whose similar Quirk and personality make him a kindred spirit.
Eijiro Kirishima's Quirk is Hardening, which allows him to instantly harden any part of his body, granting it a rock-like durability and increased offensive power. With his Quirk active, his skin becomes tough enough to withstand bullets, sword strikes, and massive blunt force trauma. The hardening can be used on a small area, like a fist for a punch, or across his entire body to become an immovable shield. This makes him particularly effective at close-range combat, where he can tank enemy hits and deliver powerful counter-blows. His signature techniques include Red Counter, a hardened counter-punch, and Red Gauntlet, a full-force body blow. His most powerful technique is Red Riot Unbreakable, a state where he pushes his Quirk to its absolute limit, massively amplifying his hardness to an almost impenetrable level for roughly thirty to forty seconds. In this form, his appearance becomes more craggy and monstrous, and while his defenses are at their peak, he is left vulnerable once the time limit expires and his stamina is drained. A weakness of his Quirk is that his hardening will eventually deplete his stamina if maintained for too long.
Throughout the story, Kirishima experiences significant personal growth. He initially harbored doubts about his Quirk not being flashy enough, but his resolve strengthens as he embraces the role of a defensive stalwart. A major turning point occurs during the Shie Hassaikai arc, where he pushes himself to achieve the Unbreakable form to protect his mentor, the pro hero Fat Gum, and his friend. His ability to withstand a relentless barrage from the villain Kendo Rappa became a critical moment in the battle, earning him recognition from both heroes and villains alike. This event helped solidify his confidence and proved his worth as a hero. After graduating from U.A., Kirishima goes on to become the No. 12 ranked Pro Hero, living up to the legacy of his idol Crimson Riot and solidifying his place as a dependable and manly hero.
