Description
Katsuki Bakugo is a central character in My Hero Academia, known for his explosive temper and powerful Quirk. He was born in Shizuoka and grew up in the same neighborhood as Izuku Midoriya, with the two being childhood friends. From a young age, Bakugo displayed immense confidence, energy, and natural talent, which led his peers to admire him and give him the nickname Kacchan. His aggressive tendencies became more pronounced after he developed his Quirk, Explosion, as he was constantly praised for his powerful ability. This praise fostered a twisted superiority complex in him, leading him to believe he was better than others, particularly looking down on Midoriya for being Quirkless. A key incident in their childhood, where Midoriya tried to help a fallen Bakugo, was perceived by the latter as a deep insult to his pride, creating a lasting tension between them. Despite this, Bakugo always admired All Might, the number one hero, for his unwavering ability to win.

Bakugo’s personality is defined by his immense pride, arrogance, and aggression. He is highly impulsive and often appears crude, with a habit of yelling and using intimidating language. His desire to be the best is absolute, declaring from a young age that he will surpass All Might and become the top hero, a goal that drives nearly all of his actions. This drive is coupled with a belief that victory is the most important aspect of being a hero. Beneath his explosive exterior, however, lies a sharp and strategic intellect. He possesses outstanding combat sense and is a talented fighter, capable of quickly devising and executing complex maneuvers in battle. Despite his seemingly insurmountable ego, Bakugo is capable of acknowledging when he has been defeated, even if it causes him significant internal turmoil.

Bakugo’s role in the story is that of a deuteragonist and rival to Izuku Midoriya. His primary motivation is to prove his superiority and achieve his goal of becoming the number one hero. Initially, this manifests as a deep-seated jealousy and resentment toward Midoriya, whose inherent heroic nature and sudden acquisition of a powerful Quirk challenge Bakugo’s worldview. He also becomes a target for the League of Villains, who see his power and aggressive attitude as potential for turning him to their side, an offer he furiously rejects as his goal is to be a hero. Over time, his role evolves from a simple rival to a crucial ally, as he learns the truth about Midoriya’s Quirk, One For All, and becomes one of the few people entrusted with this secret. He later takes on an active role in helping Midoriya master his powers and in fighting against major villains like Tomura Shigaraki and All For One.

His key relationships are central to his development. His dynamic with Izuku Midoriya is the most significant. It evolves from childhood friendship to one-sided bullying and contempt from Bakugo, driven by his jealousy of Midoriya’s selfless heroism. After suffering a loss to Midoriya in a training exercise and going through a significant emotional breakdown, Bakugo begins to see him differently. This culminates in a second, decisive fight where Bakugo confronts his feelings of guilt and inferiority, leading to a cathartic moment where he finally apologizes for his past bullying and acknowledges Midoriya as a worthy rival. Within his family, Bakugo has a volatile relationship with his mother, Mitsuki, who shares his short temper and often yells back at him, disapproving of his arrogance. His father, Masaru, is calmer but clearly loves his son, despite not approving of his attitude. At U.A. High School, his initial hostility isolates him, but he slowly builds friendships, most notably with Eijiro Kirishima, whose unwavering manliness and respect help Bakugo learn to cooperate with others.

The development of Katsuki Bakugo is one of the most pronounced in the series. He starts as an arrogant bully who values only strength and victory. His capture by the Sludge Villain and his subsequent rescue by All Might and Midoriya plants early seeds of doubt. However, his defeat at the hands of Midoriya during their first combat training is the catalyst for his first major breakdown, as his entire self-image is shattered. The guilt he feels after All Might loses his power while saving him from the League of Villains forces him to confront the consequences of his actions. This guilt, combined with his realization about Midoriya’s Quirk, leads him to challenge Midoriya to a serious fight. During this fight and its aftermath, he finally admits his jealousy, apologizes for his behavior, and resolves to be a better person. He learns the importance of teamwork, becomes a more effective leader, and develops a genuine, albeit still competitive, friendship with Midoriya. In a selfless act during a major battle, he takes a fatal blow meant for Midoriya, demonstrating how far he has come from the boy who only fought for himself. After this, he continues to fight alongside his classmates, and following the final battle, he becomes one of Japan's top heroes.

Bakugo’s notable abilities stem from his Quirk, Explosion. This power allows him to secrete a nitroglycerin-like substance from the sweat glands in his palms, which he can detonate at will to create powerful blasts. Prolonged or excessive use of his Quirk causes throbbing pain in his arms and shoulders. He has developed remarkable versatility with his Quirk, using it not just for direct attacks but also for mobility, effectively allowing him to propel himself through the air to achieve a form of flight. He has created several named super moves. Blast Rush Turbo uses explosions from his hands to launch himself forward at high speed. Stun Grenade creates a sphere of light between his hands that explodes into a blinding flash to disorient opponents. Howitzer Impact is one of his most powerful moves, where he spins rapidly in the air to build up momentum and oxygen before releasing a devastating explosive tornado. AP Shot involves focusing a blast through a circle made with his other hand, creating a concentrated, armor-piercing beam. His hero costume includes Grenadier Bracers that store his explosive sweat, allowing him to unleash a massive, concentrated blast without suffering as much physical strain, though using it still takes a toll on his shoulder.
