TV-Series
Description
Naoya Zenin is the youngest son of Naobito Zenin, the former head of the Zenin clan, one of the three great families of the jujutsu world. He was raised in an environment that celebrated strength and hierarchy, which shaped him into an embodiment of the clan’s most toxic traditions. From childhood, he was considered a prodigy, inheriting his father’s prized cursed technique, Projection Sorcery, and quickly rising to the rank of Special Grade 1 sorcerer. He also served as the leader of the Hei, the Zenin clan’s elite group of sorcerers. His upbringing, combined with his natural talent, fostered an unshakeable sense of superiority.
Naoya’s personality is defined by extreme arrogance, narcissism, and a deeply ingrained misogyny. He believes that strength and bloodline determine a person’s worth and looks down on nearly everyone, especially women and those without cursed energy. He views Maki Zenin, his cousin who was born with no cursed energy, as an insult to the family and treats her with relentless cruelty. He also holds a contemptuous attitude toward his own older brothers, dismissing them as weak. Despite his devotion to the clan’s traditional values, Naoya secretly idolizes Toji Fushiguro, a clan outcast who achieved legendary status through physical prowess alone. This contradiction reveals a fragile self-image beneath his bravado.
Naoya’s primary motivation is to become the head of the Zenin clan. When his father Naobito dies during the Shibuya Incident, Naoya fully expects to inherit the position. However, Naobito’s will names Megumi Fushiguro, Toji’s son and a wielder of the Ten Shadows Technique, as the successor. This decision shatters Naoya’s sense of entitlement and drives him to murderous extremes. He plots to kill Megumi and anyone else who stands in his way, including Maki and her twin sister Mai. His obsession with securing the clan leadership fuels every major action he takes.
In the story, Naoya first appears during the Itadori’s Extermination arc, where he attempts to eliminate Yuji Itadori and Choso to draw out Megumi. He engages Choso in combat, demonstrating his exceptional speed and mastery of Projection Sorcery, but is ultimately defeated due to his overconfidence. Later, during the Perfect Preparation arc, he arrives at the Zenin compound expecting to claim his inheritance, only to find that Maki has already slaughtered most of the clan. In a fierce confrontation, Maki overpowers him, and he is left mortally wounded. Because he was not killed using cursed energy, his intense resentment and unfulfilled ambition cause him to reincarnate as a vengeful cursed spirit.
His role in the Culling Game arc becomes that of a monstrous antagonist. Initially appearing as a cursed womb in the form of a caterpillar-like chrysalis, he eventually fully manifests into a grotesque cursed spirit with a skull-like face and extendable tendrils. In this form, his speed and cursed technique are greatly enhanced, and he gains the ability to fly and use a domain expansion that manipulates time perception. He attacks Maki and Noritoshi Kamo within the Culling Game, driven purely by spite and a refusal to accept Maki’s strength. However, because Maki lacks cursed energy, the domain cannot recognize her as a target, and she ultimately exorcises him for good.
Key relationships in Naoya’s life include his father Naobito, whom he sought to emulate and surpass; his cousin Maki Zenin, whom he both despises and fears; Megumi Fushiguro, whom he views as a usurper; and Toji Fushiguro, his secret idol. His interaction with Choso and Yuji also highlights his tactical intelligence but also his fatal arrogance. Throughout the narrative, Naoya undergoes no positive growth; his development is a descent deeper into hatred and obsession, culminating in his transformation into a curse that is finally destroyed.
Naoya’s most notable ability is Projection Sorcery, an inherited technique from the Zenin clan. This technique allows him to perceive one second as twenty-four distinct frames, pre-programming his movements within each frame to achieve blinding speed and perfect positioning. Anyone he touches with his palm while the technique is active must also follow the twenty-four-frame rule or be frozen for one second. This ability makes him one of the fastest sorcerers alive. Additionally, he possesses advanced hand-to-hand combat skills and a sharp tactical mind. In his cursed spirit form, he gains cursed spirit physiology, enabling flight, rapid regeneration, and even greater speed, along with a domain expansion that enhances his time-manipulation abilities.
