Description
Akira Kagami is a debugger employed by the company Entermation Inc., trapped within the virtual reality world of an advanced video game alongside her peers. Her in-game avatar is that of a fighter, and she wields a massive sword as long as her body. Physically, her avatar is an elf, distinguished by long, pointed ears, gray hair cut to ear length, and blue eyes. She is first introduced to the main party while clad in a full set of black armor, leading them to initially refer to her as the "black knight" before her identity is revealed.
Akira possesses a personality that is free-spirited, lively, and perky, quickly integrating herself into the group with an energetic demeanor. However, beneath this cheerful exterior lies a more pragmatic and morally flexible individual. She is noted for having no qualms about using lethal force against non-player characters or other debuggers she deems a threat, and she is willing to use her debug console to perform actions that others might find questionable. Unlike some other debuggers who have succumbed to hedonism or outright sociopathy, Akira appears to be a relatively stable and functioning adult, though her clingy and intense behavior provides a comedic contrast to her more serious companions. She is also an excellent cook, a skill that endears her to the group.
Her motivations are rooted in a desire to carve out a stable life for herself within the game world. Before joining Haga's party, she traveled alone, actively hunting down and killing any debugger who abused their privileges in ways that threatened the existence she was trying to build for herself. Her decision to join the group is framed by her search for allies who share a similar sense of purpose and her opposition to those who exploit the game's systems for selfish or cruel ends.
In the story, Akira serves as a new and dynamic addition to the main party, which consists of Haga, Nikola, and Amano. Her presence adds texture to the group's relationships, offering a different energy that balances the straightforward friendship between Haga and Nikola and the snarky demeanor of Amano. Her interactions with Haga hint at the potential for a strong partnership, sometimes resembling a parental unit with the younger Nikola, while Amano takes on the role of a grumpy but reliable uncle.
Akira's character develops primarily through her interactions with the group and her confrontations with the moral dilemmas of their world. While she is fiercely loyal to her new companions, her worldview clashes with Haga's more idealistic perspective. Unlike Haga and Amano, she does not see non-player characters as real people, which leads to a significant moment when she uses her debug stone's "Kill" command to execute Gaydle, an NPC Seeker who had gone on a destructive rampage. Even after Haga had momentarily calmed the situation, Akira acted on her belief that Gaydle had become too dangerous to be left alive, demonstrating her willingness to "shoot the dog" for the perceived greater good.
As a debugger, Akira has access to a debug stone, a tablet-like device that grants her powerful console commands that can alter the game world. She is not hesitant to use these abilities, even for morally questionable purposes, in stark contrast to Haga, who takes a hard stance against using debug mode for personal gain. Her notable abilities include wielding her oversized sword in combat and employing her debug commands, such as the "Kill" command, to eliminate threats directly. Her combat prowess and willingness to engage in brutal fights make her a formidable ally and a dangerous enemy.
