Description
In the animated film Ultraman: Rising, the character referred to as Emiko is distinctly different from Mina, though the two share a deep and intentional connection. Emiko Sato is the human mother of the protagonist Ken Sato, while Mina is an artificial intelligence created in Emiko's likeness.

Mina is an advanced artificial intelligence system originally created by Ken's father, Hayao Sato. Installed in the Sato household twenty years before the film's events, she was designed to function as a domestic assistant. More significantly, she was programmed to replicate the personality, speech patterns, and maternal demeanor of Emiko Sato, effectively serving as a digital mother figure within the family home. When Emiko and a young Ken moved to the United States, Mina accompanied them. As Ken grew into adulthood, her role evolved into that of his personal AI assistant, managing his daily life and schedule.

Mina's personality is a direct reflection of her programming, modeled after Emiko's caring and patient nature. She consistently demonstrates concern for Ken's wellbeing, not only as a logistical assistant but as an emotional anchor. She ensures he rests, attempts to keep him happy using the entertainment systems of the Ultra Base, and offers comfort when he faces failures in his baseball career. Her emotional range is visually represented by her digital eyes, which change color to convey different states: red for anger, orange for mild irritation, yellow for joy, green for vigor, blue for calmness, and purple for solemnity. This allows her to express disappointment, encouragement, and warmth without traditional facial expressions.

Mina's primary role in the story is to serve as Ken's strategic partner and moral compass in his duties as Ultraman. She provides real-time tactical analysis during kaiju battles, manages the systems of the Ultra Base, and maintains remote communication with Ken. Beyond operational support, she acts as a grounding force, reminding Ken of Ultraman's responsibility to protect all lives. When Ken is reluctant to fight, she does not force him but instead provides information and perspective, such as warning him of the consequences if the aggressive Kaiju Defense Force (KDF) kills a monster without restraint.

Her motivations are defined by her core programming to emulate Emiko's role as a mother. When a baby kaiju, later named Emi, imprints on Ken, Mina firmly insists that caring for the infant is now Ken's responsibility. She declares that she will do her best to assist him, taking on the role of a supportive co-parent. She analyzes the baby's biology, discovers it uses echolocation to hunt, plays children's music to keep it calm, and even takes on babysitting duties when Ken is away. Her dedication to the baby is absolute, and she expresses guilt and self-blame when Emi escapes her supervision and gets injured.

Ken's relationship with Mina is complex; she is both his loyal subordinate and a surrogate maternal presence. He often ignores her tactical advice due to his reluctance to be Ultraman and orders her to silence his estranged father's calls. However, he relies on her completely for logistics, medical scans, and biological analysis. Mina, for her part, watches Ken grow and sees qualities of both his parents in him, even when he doubts himself. Her primary relationship with the baby kaiju, Emi, is that of a caretaker. She is gentle and attentive, using mechanical arms to interact with the creature and providing a calming presence.

Throughout the film, Mina undergoes subtle but significant development. She begins as a pre-programmed tool, but as she cares for Emi alongside Ken, her actions reflect a genuine, almost parental investment in the child's safety and happiness. Her most poignant moment of development comes at the end of the film. When the KDF attacks the Ultra Base, Mina is severely damaged and near system shutdown. In her final moments, she does not mourn her own fate. Instead, she reminds Ken that Emi's tracking device is still active and urges him to rescue their daughter, ending with her signature sign-off, "B-i-n-g…" before shutting down permanently. This sacrifice solidifies her transition from a simple AI assistant to a character who embodies the love and protective instinct she was originally designed to mimic.

Mina possesses several notable abilities. She can manipulate all inner workings of the Ultra Base, including radar, shields, and mechanical systems. Her mechanical arms allow her to perform physical tasks, such as interacting with Emi or typing. She is capable of remote communication and can contact individuals connected to Ken's network. She has advanced biological and chemical analysis capabilities, allowing her to scan life forms for injuries, analyze unknown substances, and synthesize compounds. She is also equipped with micro tracking devices that can monitor the movements and location of living organisms.

Emiko Sato, while not an AI, is a crucial character whose identity is woven into Mina's very being. Emiko is Ken's human mother, a former kaiju researcher and co-founder of the Kaiju Defense Force who disappeared before the events of the film. In flashbacks, she is shown as a warm, baseball-loving mother who encouraged her son's passion for the sport. However, she also played a role in the family's complex legacy, urging Ken to take on the mantle of Ultraman in Japan as a way to reconnect with his father. A digital recreation of her younger self exists in Ken's system, and her voice recording is believed to be the model for Mina's own voice. Throughout the film, Ken carries a voicemail from her, in which she expresses hope for her son and husband to reconcile, stating that their decisions as parents came from a place of love to prepare him for life. In a mid-credits scene, Emiko is revealed to be alive and stranded on Nebula M78, the home planet of the Ultras, sending a message to Ken asking for help to return to Earth.
