Description
Kiriko Masaki is the childhood friend and a central figure in the life of Seina Yamada. She frequently tended to the injuries he sustained from his extraordinary bad luck, acting as his primary defender and caretaker during their youth. This deep care and responsibility for his well-being began after an encounter between their parents, where Seina's mother expressed immense gratitude that her son had found friends who were not driven away by his misfortune.
She leads a secret double life. While appearing as a normal resident of Masaki Village on Earth, Kiriko is actually a distant descendant of Juraian Royalty, from the line of First Prince Yosho and his wife Kasumi. Members of the Masaki family are typically not informed of their alien heritage until adulthood, but Kiriko learned of it accidentally as a child. This early discovery was triggered by overhearing a conversation about a dangerous biological weapon, a symbiote, released on Earth by space pirates. Fearing for Seina's safety, she rushed to protect him and became infected by the symbiote, which painfully mutated her arm. The entity was destroyed when Minaho severed the infected limb, though Kiriko occasionally reports still hearing a voice from her regrown arm in adulthood, which may contribute to her occasional uncontrollable rage.
Upon graduating school, Kiriko joined the Galaxy Police Academy, where she underwent training that included a period spent in an area of accelerated time for ten years. She built a distinguished career, becoming an Immigration Officer, and was once a lady-in-waiting for Seto Kamiki Jurai, the "Devil Princess of Jurai." This connection later aided her position within the GP. Despite her success, a contributing factor for leaving Earth was to escape the constant strain of Seina's bad luck, a motive that caused her significant shame.
Her relationship with Seina Yamada is complex and evolves significantly. She harbors a deep love for him, though she initially attempted to rationalize these feelings as merely sisterly. When she discovered he had enrolled in the GP Academy, she repeatedly pleaded with him to return to Earth for his own safety. After he refused, she accepted a reassignment to the academy as an instructor to personally supervise his training and protect him, also moving in with Amane Kaunaq to monitor her interactions with Seina. She often becomes jealous when other women show him affection, particularly Amane.
Feelings of inadequacy compared to the other women in Seina's life, such as the former model Amane, the space pirate Ryoko Balta, and the high priestess Neju Na Melmas, plagued her. Her status changed dramatically following a ceremony witnessed by Juraian royalty, where she was bonded to a second-generation Royal Tree named Mizuki at Seto's insistence, granting her the title Kiriko Masaki Jurai. This tree, combined with the cabbit Fuku, provides immense power to Seina's ship, the Kamidake II, and can generate Lighthawk Wings.
Kiriko is a highly capable and sometimes fearsome operative. She possesses a stealth suit with cloaking technology and has access to advanced GP weaponry and training. In combat, her eyes can change from their normal gold color to a blood red, and she can become singularly focused and deadly, a side of herself she was initially concerned about revealing to Seina. This was demonstrated when she challenged and effortlessly defeated four Renza princes and an entire garrison of knights using a mecha gifted by Washu, after they insulted Seina, establishing a formidable reputation.
She eventually marries Seina Yamada as part of a political marriage and is overjoyed by the engagement. The wedding was interrupted by kidnappers, but she and the other brides pursued them. Later, during extended political dealings in the Renza Federation, she joined an adventurer's guild. She and Seina have a normal sex life and eventually have a child together, a son shown in later episodes.
Her family background is detailed in the official GXP novels. She and her younger brother Kai are half-siblings with different fathers. Her father was Ken Raraiba Steinbeck, a Galaxy Police officer declared deceased after a mysterious incident. Men who marry into the Masaki family typically take the Masaki surname, and it is noted that Kiriko uses Masaki instead of Steinbeck. Her mother is Tsukiko Masaki. Kiriko and her mother were also present at the funeral for Tenchi Masaki's mother, Kiyone.
Her name, Kiriko, means "fog, mist, haze" and "love." Her surname Masaki means "right, proper" and "tree, wood." A doujinshi by the franchise creator presents a potential future where her son with Seina marries the daughters of Ayeka and Ryoko.
