Description
Orphen, born Krylancelo Finrandi, is the main protagonist of the anime Sorcerous Stabber Orphen -Doom of Dragon's Sanctuary-. He is a young man with brown eyes and disheveled brown hair, easily recognized by his signature red headband and his practical, biker-like style of clothing. His name is derived from the word orphan, a reference to his origins as an orphan who was taken in and educated by a sorcerous institution.

His background is rooted in the Tower of Fang, one of the most prestigious training institutions for sorcerers on the continent of Kiesalhima. As a child, he was recognized for exceptional talent in black sorcery, the branch of magic that manipulates physical phenomena such as heat and light, and he became one of the Tower's most promising black sorcerers. He was also trained in the secret discipline of a Stabber, a sorcerer who learns assassination techniques and specialized deadly spells meant for eliminating other sorcerers, although he resented this training because he despises killing. His life was permanently changed when his foster sister, Azalie, was transformed into a dragon-like monster known as Bloody August. When the Tower of Fang decided that Azalie had to be destroyed, Orphen abandoned the organization, adopted the name Orphen, and began a search that would define his life. In the years before the main story, he settled in the commercial city of Totokanta and supported himself by lending money in the back streets while continuing to look for her.

In terms of personality, Orphen is known for his arrogance, gruff demeanor, and short temper, as well as a near-obsessive determination to finish whatever he is working on as quickly as possible without distraction. He often projects a lazy and carefree attitude, but beneath that surface he is a highly focused and independent person who is fully aware of his own strength. He tends to complain about trouble and would prefer to avoid being dragged into the affairs of others, yet he consistently dedicates himself to protecting people and fighting for what he believes is right. He can be blunt, sarcastic, and reluctant to show his feelings, but his actions reveal a deep sense of loyalty toward the people who matter to him.

His central motivation is to return Azalie to her former human state. This goal places him in opposition to the Tower of Fang, to the Church of Kimluck, and to anyone else who wants the transformed Azalie killed, and it drives nearly every decision he makes. In Doom of Dragon's Sanctuary, his quest leads him into the territory known as the Imminent Domain, where, guided by a woman named Winona, he seeks an audience with Almagest, the domain's powerful lord, hoping to find answers that might resolve the threat surrounding Azalie and the dragon sanctuary.

As the protagonist, Orphen is the character around whom the story centers. He acts as both a formidable sorcerer and an unwilling leader, gathering a small group of traveling companions around him and guiding them through dangerous encounters with dragons, church agents, and the hidden secrets of the world. His role in the story is defined by his pursuit of Azalie, but his journey repeatedly forces him to confront larger conflicts that go beyond his personal mission.

His most important relationship is with Azalie Cait-Sith, his foster sister, who has been trapped in a dragon form for five years. She is both the emotional core of his quest and the source of much of his pain. His traveling companions Volkan and Dortin, a pair of clumsy and often scheming adventurers, frequently involve him in dubious money-making plans, yet they form a loyal and dependable group with him over time. The young sorcerer Majic Lin becomes a student-like companion who looks up to him, and Cleao Everlasting joins the group under her own circumstances and grows close to the others. Leki, a small dragon-like creature, travels alongside him and supports him in various situations, whether in combat or with practical knowledge. From his past, the instructor Childman Powderfield remains a significant figure, as do fellow Tower of Fang students such as Hartia Allenford and Leticia MacCready, whose connections to his former life continue to surface throughout his journey. In the Sanctuary arc, Winona acts as his guide into unfamiliar territory, while Almagest appears as a powerful and enigmatic figure whose secrets Orphen must uncover.

Over the course of the story, Orphen develops from a self-centered wanderer who wants to be left alone into a more responsible and dependable person. He gradually confronts his past at the Tower of Fang, faces the institutions and people who shaped his childhood, and comes to understand the true nature of dragons and the sanctuary. He learns to trust others, to accept help, and to take responsibility for the wider consequences of his actions. His stubbornness and impatience remain part of who he is, but he becomes more willing to fight not only for Azalie but also for the safety of his friends and the world around him. His relationships deepen over time, and he grows into someone who can carry the weight of leadership even when he complains about it.

In terms of ability, Orphen is an exceptionally skilled black sorcerer. His magic is vocal in nature, meaning he casts spells by speaking or shouting, and his preferred techniques involve the destructive manipulation of heat, light, and other physical forces. His education at the Tower of Fang gave him a thorough understanding of sorcerous theory, allowing him to adapt and improvise spells even under pressure. As a former Stabber trainee, he also possesses knowledge of secret combat techniques and lethal spells that go beyond ordinary sorcery, though he avoids using his training for killing whenever possible. He is a capable fighter who combines powerful offensive magic with quick thinking, sharp instincts, and considerable endurance, making him a match for the sorcerers, church enforcers, and dragon-kind he encounters. His combination of raw talent, practical cunning, and willingness to place himself in danger defines him as a character shaped as much by his flaws as by his great power.
