TV Special
Description
Delling Rembran is a central antagonist in the Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury Prologue and the main television series. He holds the positions of president of the powerful Benerit Group and the supervising representative of the auditing organization Cathedra. His background includes a past as a military man and a stint as a top manager at the Grassley Defense Systems company, where he was a direct subordinate of its CEO, Sarius Zenelli. This military history heavily shapes his worldview, which is authoritarian, cold, and ruthless. He is a staunch social Darwinist who believes that power dictates right and that the strong make the rules while the weak must silently obey. Delling has little patience for failure and is known to mercilessly cut off subsidiary companies that do not produce satisfactory results. He is also notably arrogant, viewing himself as a king with the absolute authority to do as he pleases, often dismissing logic or facts with the simple declaration that he has decided something.

Delling's primary motivation stems from his battlefield experiences, which led him to a specific and unforgiving conclusion about weapons. He firmly believes that weapons should only exist to kill people and that there should be no excuses for this. In his view, a person who uses a tool meant for killing must bear the associated sin. This philosophy is what drives his deep-seated hatred for the GUND Format and its associated mobile suits, which he condemns as a curse because they not only take the lives of opponents but also kill their own pilots. He believes that the act of killing must remain a human burden, and machines should not impose punishment. This ideological conviction, combined with his personal ambition, makes him the instigator of the Vanadis Incident, the tragic event depicted in the Prologue. He unilaterally ordered the attack on the Vanadis Institute, known as Fólkvangr, and the headquarters of the Ochs Earth Corporation without the approval of the Mobile Suit Development Council, assuming full responsibility for the operation. Simultaneously, during a press conference where he was introduced as the supervising representative of Cathedra, he publicly denounced the Gundams and declared that his organization would deny them all. This event was a power grab that brought him fame as a hero and paved the way for his rise to the presidency of the Benerit Group.

In the story, Delling functions as a primary source of conflict. His actions in the Prologue set the entire plot in motion, creating the circumstances that lead to the main series. He is the strict and authoritative leader who oversees the Asticassia School of Technology, and he has even established a dueling system where his own daughter, Miorine Rembran, is treated as a prize to be won by the top-ranked duelist, known as the Holder. His role is that of a harsh and domineering patriarch whose decisions impact the lives of many across the Earth Sphere. Beneath his cold exterior, he harbors a complex hidden agenda: the completion of Quiet Zero, a project originally conceived by his late wife, Notrette. While publicly he has buried GUND technology, his plan to achieve political, military, and economic control of the Earth Sphere secretly depends on utilizing it.

The most significant relationship in Delling's life is with his daughter, Miorine. Their bond is extremely strained and often depicted as failed. Delling treats Miorine with a harsh and seemingly indifferent demeanor, controlling her life through marriage arrangements and barring her from attending her mother's funeral. For much of the story, Miorine views him with rebellious anger, seeing him as an unfair and double-standard father who only cares about power. However, their relationship reveals hidden layers of complexity. On a business level, when Miorine starts her own company, GUND-ARM Inc., Delling provides fair and accurate guidance, offering her a wise warning about the weight of the Gundam curse and even investing in her venture. More profoundly, during a terrorist attack on Plant Quetta, Delling's instincts override his cold persona; he throws himself in front of Miorine to shield her from falling debris, sustaining severe spinal injuries and falling into a coma. This act of sacrifice proves that, despite his abusive and neglectful parenting, he genuinely loves his daughter in a deeply flawed and malformed way.

Over the course of the narrative, Delling undergoes a notable if limited development. He begins as an unwavering, tyrannical force who bends rules to his will and refuses to accept the Aerial as anything other than a Gundam based purely on his decree. After being comatose for over a month, he awakens just before the final battle. Though unable to speak, he demonstrates his enduring leadership by working behind the scenes to buy time for Miorine and her allies against the Quiet Zero plan, even requesting an emergency meeting with the Space Assembly League. By the epilogue, three years later, he appears at a hearing for former Benerit Group leaders, having survived the tumultuous events and witnessed the dissolution of the empire he built. His character arc moves from a purely antagonistic enforcer of order to a more complex figure whose harsh actions were partly driven by a desire to fulfill his late wife's dream, and who ultimately makes a personal sacrifice for his child.

Delling Rembran's notable abilities lie not in piloting but in political and strategic leadership. He is an expert in business management and political maneuvering, possessing the strength of will and strategic acumen to simultaneously run the massive Benerit Group, oversee the Cathedra auditing organization, and serve as chairman of the Asticassia School of Technology. He is also an exceptionally skilled orator, capable of delivering powerful and convincing speeches that can move public opinion and justify his most ruthless actions, as seen during his proclamation against the Gundams at the press conference.
