TV-Series
Description
Ondine, also known as Misty in English-language versions of the series and Kasumi in the original Japanese, is a Pokémon trainer and the Gym Leader of the Cerulean Gym, where she awards the Cascade Badge to trainers who defeat her. She specializes in Water-type Pokémon and has long pursued the goal of becoming the world's greatest Water-type trainer. In the final anime arc Pokémon: To Be a Pokémon Master, which closes the journey of protagonist Ash and his partner Pikachu, Ondine reunites with Ash and their longtime companion Brock for one last adventure together.
Ondine is the youngest of four sisters who run the Cerulean Gym. Her three older sisters once performed together and often treated her dismissively, calling her the runt of the family, and being overlooked by them shaped much of her early personality. She took over the gym when her sisters left on a round-the-world trip after winning a prize draw, and even after they returned, she continued to handle most of the gym's work because they neglected their duties. Growing up in a Water-type gym gave her deep knowledge of Water Pokémon and a strong attachment to them. She also has a known fear of Bug-type Pokémon and, in earlier parts of the story, a fear of Gyarados that she eventually overcame.
In personality, Ondine is spirited, competitive, strong-willed, proud, and quick to speak her mind. She is confident in her abilities as a trainer and does not hesitate to challenge others, including Ash, with whom she shares a long history of teasing and snarky banter. Beneath her tough exterior, she is caring and dependable, with a strong sense of responsibility, and she tends to hide her worries rather than show weakness to others. She is deeply devoted to her Pokémon, especially Water types, and takes great pride in her appearance and in the self-styled titles she gives herself.
Her primary motivation is to become a world-class Water-type trainer. In the final arc, she leaves the gym in her sisters' care to travel again, partly because she has developed a strong connection to a wild Clauncher, a Water-type Pokémon she has hooked repeatedly on her fishing line but never managed to catch. She feels a sense of destiny about this Pokémon and is determined to add it to her team.
Ondine's role in the story is that of a returning companion. She reunites with Ash in the early episodes after he tries to catch the same Clauncher she has been pursuing, and the two compete over the right to catch it. Ondine wins the contest, captures the Clauncher, and then follows Ash, asking to join his travels. She remains part of the group alongside Brock, and the three revisit familiar places and Pokémon from their earlier journeys. At the end of the arc, Ondine parts ways with Ash at a crossroads and returns to Cerulean City to resume her duties as Gym Leader.
Her key relationships are with Ash and Brock. With Ash, she has an easy rivalry built on mutual respect; their constant teasing is affectionate, and Pikachu is clearly fond of her. With Brock, she is a trusted companion who often keeps him in line, traditionally grabbing his ear whenever he becomes distracted by attractive women. She also forms a quick bond with her newly caught Clauncher, which becomes part of her team.
Over the course of the series, Ondine matures from a short-tempered and somewhat spoiled young trainer into a more patient, kind, and sensible young woman while keeping her fierce independence. In the final arc, her reunion with Ash shows how durable their friendship has become, and her decision to travel again reflects her continued growth as a trainer. Her farewell to Ash is brief and calm, bringing a long partnership to a natural close.
In terms of abilities, Ondine is a skilled Water-type battler and an accomplished angler who uses custom fishing lures of her own design. She has strong practical knowledge of Water Pokémon behavior, which she demonstrates when she tracks, battles, and eventually catches Clauncher. Her victory over Ash in their contest highlights her battle instincts and her talent as a trainer, and her position as a Gym Leader confirms that she is strong enough to test challengers seeking the Cascade Badge.
