Description
Ryūjin, the dragon god ruling Lake Suwa in Nagano Prefecture, is known as a son of Ōkuninushi, the supreme deity of Izumo-taisha Shrine. A contractual obligation binds him to Lake Suwa, preventing his departure or reunion with his father. During Kanna's quest for godly feast offerings, Ryūjin challenges her resolve by instructing her to jump toward a floating shrine, later revealed as an illusion. Kanna fails the test when she hesitates to aid Yasha. Ryūjin initially declares her unworthy, deeming her motives selfish. His perspective shifts upon Kanna's confession that her true desire is reuniting with her deceased mother. This longing resonates deeply with Ryūjin's own separation from Ōkuninushi. Acknowledging their shared experience of familial absence, he grants his offering—water from Lake Suwa—despite her failure. Ryūjin's role concludes with this act; his contractual confinement to the lake endures, emphasizing the permanence of his divine obligations.
