Description
Kōsuke is a young boy living in the village of Takasu Rinchū, in the region of present-day Gifu Prefecture, during the mid-18th century. He is the grandson of the village elder, a respected leader in the community. When catastrophic floods strike the area, Kōsuke loses all of his family members in the disaster, a tragedy that leaves him orphaned and deeply affected. After the flood, he is taken in by his grandfather, the elder, and continues to live in the village.
In terms of personality, Kōsuke is resilient and determined. Despite the immense personal loss he suffers, he does not withdraw into despair. Instead, he channels his grief into action, showing a strong will to rebuild and protect his home. He is also courageous and willing to take on difficult physical labor alongside adults, even at a young age. His friendship with Yokichi, another village boy, is a central relationship; the two boys support each other through the hardships of the flood and the subsequent reconstruction efforts.
