Description
Maya is a phantom cat, also referred to as a were-cat, who appears in the form of a young schoolgirl. Unlike most of her kind, who are aggressive and enjoy causing destruction, she is calm, quiet, kind, and deeply shy. She rarely speaks and does not want to hurt people or damage property.
Her backstory begins when she was a stray kitten. A young Yoichi Taba found her and took care of her, an act of kindness that left a lasting impression on Maya. Because of this experience, she came to believe that most humans are caring and gentle like Yoichi. Years later, after Yoichi joins the security company Kagura Total Security, Maya is recruited by a figure named Socks to work for Black Cat, the leader of one of the two factions of phantom cats. Black Cat orders Maya to follow Yoichi and spy on Kagura Security. However, Maya recognizes Yoichi as the boy who once cared for her, and she refuses to carry out the spying mission. Instead, she aligns herself with Kagura Security, coming to view its members as her family.
Maya’s primary motivation is her loyalty and affection toward Yoichi Taba. She is willing to protect him with her life and is almost always by his side, whether he is at work or at home. Her decision to side with Kagura Security puts her at odds with the other phantom cats, who pursue her as a result.
Key relationships include Yoichi Taba, to whom she is extremely devoted, and the other members of Kagura Security, whom she considers family. She also has ties to Black Cat and the phantom cat faction, but those are strained due to her defection.
In terms of her development, early in the story she is injured during a conflict. Following that incident, she receives advice from Kuro-Neko, the leader of another phantom cat faction, to stand up for herself. This counsel triggers a transformation in her, leading to growth in her confidence and abilities.
Maya possesses several notable supernatural abilities typical of phantom cats. She can travel over telephone lines, allowing her to move quickly and appear in different locations. Her phantom cat nature also grants her enhanced physical capabilities, though she generally avoids using them aggressively.
