Description
Footman is a character from the anime and light novel series, serving as a member of the Moderate Harlequin Alliance, a group where he is known as the Angry Pierrot. Physically, Footman has the appearance of a massive and burly man, typically dressed in the outfit of a harlequin with a mask that covers his entire face. The mask features a large nose, a blue stripe, and a mouth, and its expression is notable for shifting rapidly between appearing enraged and joyful at a moment's notice. His green hair and deep voice complement his imposing stature. Despite his large build, he is surprisingly quick and agile.

The background of Footman extends far beyond his current appearance, as he was originally an elf from the era of the Super-Sorcery Kingdom, where he served as a soldier with a close connection to the High Elf Princess Kagali. When Kagali's father was taken over by the evil sorcerer Jahil, Footman remained loyal to the princess after her transformation into a Deathman named Kazaream. When the castle in Soma was obliterated by a young Milim Nava, Footman was one of the individuals resurrected by Kagali, alongside Tear and Clayman. Due to Kazaream's inexperience with the resurrection process at that time, the distribution of souls and power was flawed, leaving Footman with immense physical power but a mind that remained somewhat immature and unstable. After Kagali became depressed over her own cursed, rotting appearance while her companions remained unmarked, Footman, along with Tear and Clayman, decided to wear masks to share in her suffering and show their solidarity.

In terms of personality, Footman presents a complex and contradictory nature. He outwardly maintains an extremely composed, calm, and calculating demeanor, speaking in a polite and careful manner. This calculated nature is contrasted by his other side; true to his title of Angry Pierrot, he is prone to sudden, intense fits of emotion and rage, particularly when the welfare of his friends is involved. He can unpredictably flare up in anger one moment and then calm down the next as if nothing happened, and this unpredictable nature is reflected in his ever-changing mask. Despite his joking and self-deprecating attitude, he cares deeply about his companions, including Laplace and the fallen Clayman, and will show intense anger if he feels they have been wronged. His immature mind also contributes to this instability, making him a volatile individual on the battlefield.

Footman plays a recurring role as an antagonist and wild card throughout the story, often acting on the orders of his master and the alliance. In the early stages, he wrought havoc in the Jura Forest, including playing a key role in destroying the ogre village during the incident with the Orc Lord Geld, which earned him the lasting enmity of the surviving ogres like Benimaru and Geld himself. Later, at the request of Clayman, he monitored the battlefield in Eurazania, where he was discovered and confronted by an enraged Geld. Despite Geld’s power, Footman proved to be a formidable opponent, overwhelming him and demonstrating his raw strength, though he retreated when the battle turned against their side. During the attack on the Kingdom of Ruberios, he fought against an opponent named Gunther and was nearly killed, showcasing that he can be overpowered by stronger foes.

Key relationships define much of his motivation. His deepest loyalty lies with Kagali, to the extent that he is bound by a contract that prevents him from defying her, even when she is being mentally controlled by an enemy, forcing him into reluctant cooperation with the Eastern Empire. He shares a close bond with his fellow alliance members, including Tear, Laplace, and the late Clayman, whose death brought him genuine sadness. When Laplace brought news of Clayman’s death, Footman was so overcome with grief that he punched Laplace for making sarcastic remarks about their fallen friend.

In combat, Footman is a formidable physical fighter. His primary ability is a unique skill known as Amplifier, or Increaser, which allows him to manipulate waves and mass at will. The essence of this ability is amplification; by using a small wave of energy, he can amplify a material’s properties or deliver massive amounts of kinetic energy with his attacks, causing devastating damage. While his brute force makes him one of the most powerful members of the Moderate Harlequin Alliance, his combat technique is not particularly refined, and he relies heavily on his raw power and unpredictable taunts to overwhelm his opponents.

The character undergoes a significant development late in the story, rooted in his ancient past. It is revealed that his body houses the soul of Jahil, the Great Sorcerer Emperor from the destroyed super-magical nation, the same entity who had possessed Kagali’s father. During a critical battle in Eldora, Feldway signals for Jahil to take over Footman’s body, leading to his consciousness being suppressed as this ancient evil sorcerer reawakens and assumes control.
