Description
Brian Nightraider is the central protagonist of the anime The Marginal Service. An American-born police detective, he once had an exemplary career with an exceptionally high success and arrest rate. However, his career came to an abrupt end following a failed drug bust that resulted in the death of his partner. His superiors, who had already grown weary of his reckless and insubordinate attitude, used this tragedy as grounds to fire him from the force. Devastated and drowning in guilt, Brian fell into a deep depression, spending his days drinking heavily and wallowing in self-pity.

At his lowest point, a mysterious letter arrived, inviting him to join an obscure United Nations task force known as the Marginal Service. With nothing left to lose, he grudgingly accepted the invitation. He soon discovered that the Marginal Service is a secret division tasked with monitoring and policing "Borderlanders," extraterrestrial beings who live disguised within human society. While the unit handles dangerous criminals among the Borderlander population, their primary mission is to keep the existence of these aliens a secret from the general public.

Brian is characterized by a strong, almost impulsive, sense of justice and a deep-seated care for others, which often leads him to act recklessly. He is a maverick who chafes against authority and has no patience for bureaucratic red tape, a trait that frequently puts him at odds with his superiors and colleagues. Physically, Brian is athletic and well-built, with marigold-yellow hair and faded blue eyes. His standard work attire is notably unconventional, consisting of a brownish-red boilersuit similar to a Japanese tobi shokunin, the uniform of a construction worker.

Within the Marginal Service, the most significant relationship is his partnership with the veteran agent Zeno Stokes. Zeno is a stoic, by-the-book detective who serves as a perfect foil to Brian's freewheeling and chaotic style. Their dynamic is initially tense, as Zeno finds Brian undisciplined while Brian sees Zeno as rigid and uncommunicative, yet they gradually form a grudging mutual respect and a bond as fellow investigators. Brian also interacts with the rest of the eccentric team, including the tech wizard Lyra Candeyhart, the bickering duo Bolts and Robin, and the quiet field medic Cyrus N. Kuga.

Through this new role, Brian finds a renewed sense of purpose, channeling his desire for justice into hunting down dangerous Borderlander criminals. His journey sees him develop from a broken, alcoholic former cop into a functioning member of a team, though his tendency to "go off the rails" remains a persistent trait that both aids and complicates his missions. In combat, he relies on his athleticism, firearms training from his time as a detective, and a specialized weapon provided by the Marginal Service designed to be effective against the resilient physiology of Borderlanders.
