Description
Oguto is the captain of the self-defense corps of Latome Village, the settlement where the protagonist Ivy spent her early years. He is a large adult man in his late forties, with red hair cut to ear length, yellow eyes, and scars across the right side of his face and right eyebrow. He is usually seen wearing his guard uniform, and his scarred, rough appearance can make him look intimidating at first glance, though his actual demeanor is far kinder than his looks suggest.

In personality, Oguto is boisterous, warmhearted, and generous, with a strong sense of care for the people around him. He is a man of action who, once he decides something is worthwhile, acts on it immediately. This enthusiasm sometimes crosses into recklessness, and he has a tendency to overdo things, which frequently causes small problems that need to be cleaned up by others. Despite his tough and blunt manner toward criminals, he is genuinely gentle and is notably easily frightened by bugs and by other people's screams. He is also a shrewd and perceptive investigator, capable of seeing through polite exteriors and uncovering corruption among local merchants and tamer circles. His rough treatment of wrongdoers is paired with strong protective instincts toward the innocent.

Oguto's motivations center on the safety and order of Latome Village. He takes his duty seriously, rotating through gate duty and village patrols, and he is committed to rooting out dishonesty and injustice within the town's merchant and tamer communities. He is also motivated by personal fairness, showing particular concern for people who are judged unfairly or treated as weak.

In the story, Oguto plays an important supporting role during the events connected to Latome Village. He takes an interest in Ivy after she assists the town, and he treats her with genuine respect regardless of her perceived skill level. His kindness is significant to her development because he serves as the first clear example of an adult in a position of authority who is not a threat, helping Ivy begin to trust that not all authority figures are dangerous. He acts as a professional mentor to her, explaining the practical side of town defense and how the village guard cooperates with the Adventurer's Guild, and he is generous in looking after her needs during her stay.

Oguto's key relationship is with his vice-captain, Verivera, who constantly reins him in and handles the aftermath of his impulsive decisions. The two share a friendly but combative dynamic, and Verivera is one of the few people capable of making Oguto back down, particularly when genuinely angered. With Ivy, Oguto is paternal and protective, offering guidance and support without condescension. Later in the story, he takes Ivy's older sister Fecilla under his wing as a father figure, working to reform and rehabilitate her after she is falsely branded as weak by her family and the village head. This development shows Oguto extending his protective nature beyond the village guard, acting as a defender of those wrongly condemned by their own families.

Oguto's development is visible as he moves from a blunt and somewhat chaotic local guard captain into a more personally invested benefactor. His perceptiveness and compassion become increasingly clear over time, and his decision to care for Fecilla reflects a deepening of his paternal instincts. His main abilities lie in leadership and command of the village guard, practical combat experience appropriate to his position as captain, and sharp investigative instincts that allow him to detect hidden wrongdoing. He combines physical authority with keen observation, making him effective both as an enforcer and as an investigator within his community.
