Description
Enryu, designated G.B.R.-03, is a Super-AI Vehicle Machine created by the Gutsy Geoid Guard, also known as the Gutsy Galaxy Guard, as one of its first mobile units. His name translates to Flame Dragon, which directly reflects his fire-based motif and his fiery personality. He is the younger twin brother of Hyoryu, having been activated a mere five seconds after him in the year 2004. Their development utilized data from the terminal of the robot Galeon, though initial technological limitations, common to all early Super-AI robots, prevented Enryu and his brother from performing the System Change transformation between their vehicle and robot modes until an external catalyst was provided.
In terms of personality, Enryu is characterized by a boisterous, flamboyant, and headstrong nature. He acts brashly and often charges into situations without thinking, a trait that frequently leads to arguments with his calmer and more collected brother, Hyoryu. The sibling dynamic is a core part of his character, as they possess opposing personalities despite sharing the same base AI and training; Hyoryu once jokingly attributed Enryu's hotheadedness to an overloading heater, with Enryu retorting that his brother's cooling systems had frozen his heart. A notable and recurring operational quirk is Enryu's difficulty in landing properly after aerial deployment, often crashing or stumbling, a running gag that he eventually overcomes with experience.
Enryu's role in the story is primarily that of a frontline combat and rescue unit. When transformed, his vehicle mode is a fire truck equipped with an extending ladder. In his robot mode, he stands 20.5 meters tall and weighs 240 tons, or 265 tons when equipped with his signature Mirror Shield. His arsenal is built around his fire motif and includes the Chest Warmer, a powerful flamethrower mounted on his torso, and a hand-held Melting Gun. His Mirror Shield is a critical defensive tool, coated with a material that can absorb and redirect energy attacks. He also makes use of his Power Ladder, which serves as a rescue tool, a mounting platform for his rifle, and a tonfa for close-quarters combat. After the initial encounters with the Primevals, his weaponry was upgraded to fire Ul-Tech beams.
Enryu and his brother Hyoryu were initially unable to transform into robot mode on their own. Their first successful System Change was made possible when the intense emotions of the young boy Mamoru Amami boosted the power of Enryu's G-S Ride to two hundred percent. This event allowed them to intervene in a major battle and was a pivotal moment in their development, marking their transition from purely support vehicles to combat-capable robots. This difficulty with transformation was a key part of their early character arc, as they worked to overcome their technical limitations.
A significant aspect of Enryu's combat capability is his ability to combine with other robots. Through a process called Symmetrical Docking with his brother Hyoryu, the two form the larger, more powerful robot ChouRyujin. This combined form is noted as a defensive specialist, utilizing their shared equipment and the Mirror Shield as its chest armor. He can also perform Cross-Symmetrical Docking with another unit, Fuuryu, to form GouRyujin. Enryu's development continues into the series' finale, where he and Hyoryu master a technique called the Supernova, firing their maximum power beams simultaneously to overwhelm a powerful enemy. While his impulsive nature remains a core character trait, it becomes tempered by experience and a dedicated commitment to protecting humanity alongside his sibling units. His journey from an unstable, newly activated AI to a reliable and powerful warrior is a central part of his narrative.
