Description
Lepre marzolina, the Italian name for the March Hare, is a supporting character in the Alice in Wonderland episode arc of the anthology series Manga Sekai Mukashi Banashi. He is depicted as a lanky, anthropomorphic hare dressed in period clothing, with a perpetually flustered and manic demeanor that aligns with the classic Wonderland character. His background is not elaborated; he exists within the topsy-turvy logic of Wonderland and is defined by his chaotic, nonsensical behaviour and his singular obsession with teatime. His personality is marked by frenetic energy, a fondness for absurd riddles and non sequiturs, and a complete disregard for conventional social norms. He is constantly agitated, particularly about the fact that his pocket watch is stuck at six o’clock, indicating that for him time has stopped and it is always tea time.

Lepre marzolina’s primary motivation is to maintain the never-ending tea party he shares with the Mad Hatter and the Dormouse. He does not pursue any larger goal; his actions are driven by the impulse to continue the ritual of tea drinking and to impose the strange rules of his household on any visitor. In the story, his role is to confound and test Alice during her journey through Wonderland. When Alice arrives at his house, she finds a long outdoor table laden with teacups, pots, and plates, a visual representation of the unending tea party. He joins the Mad Hatter and the Dormouse in bombarding Alice with illogical questions and rude comments, such as telling her she has no right to take tea without an invitation. He serves as one of the absurd obstacles Alice must navigate, embodying the theme of madness that pervades Wonderland.

His key relationships are with the Mad Hatter, whom he treats as a co-conspirator in the tea party, and the Dormouse, who is often the victim of their antics. With Alice, he is dismissive and confrontational, showing no warmth or kindness. There is no notable development or change in his character across the episode; he remains consistently mad from beginning to end. Lepre marzolina does not possess any supernatural abilities. His notable trait is his complete immersion in his own irrational world, making him unpredictable and verbally combative. He is a memorable figure of pure eccentricity, serving as a foil to Alice’s rational attempts to make sense of Wonderland.
