Description
Pyunma, designated Cyborg 008, is one of the nine main protagonists of the Cyborg 009 anime and manga franchise. He is an African character whose exact homeland has varied between adaptations; some versions place his origins in Kenya or Tanzania, while the 2001 television series Cyborg 009: The Cyborg Soldier identifies him as a native of the fictional Muamba Republic. In the original telling, Pyunma was a 23-year-old who was destined to be enslaved together with the people of his tribe. He broke free of his chains and fled, but when he was cornered by the slave drivers, agents of the criminal organization Black Ghost killed them and took him at gunpoint to their laboratory, where he was unwillingly converted into a cyborg. In the 2001 version, his past is that of a guerrilla fighter who took part in a rebellion against an oppressive government alongside his friends Kabore and Mamado before being captured and turned into a weapon. His early visual design reflected outdated racial stereotypes of the period, and later productions gave the character a revised appearance. He is also regarded as one of the first Black hero characters in Japanese popular fiction.
In terms of personality, Pyunma is generally quiet and intelligent, with a composed and observant manner. He is compassionate and principled, guided by a strong sense of justice, and he is committed to using his abilities to protect others rather than to serve the purposes of his creators. His background as a soldier gives him discipline, bravery, and a practical, decisive approach to combat. Although he is capable of working alone and values his independence, he is loyal to his comrades and protective of those he cares about. His motivations grow out of his early experiences of oppression and enslavement: he initially fought to free his people from tyranny, and after being converted, he channels that same drive into fighting alongside the other cyborgs to thwart Black Ghost's schemes and defend peace. The character embodies themes of sacrifice, heroism, and the struggle to preserve one's humanity after being turned into a machine.
Within the team, Pyunma serves as the aquatic specialist. He is the eighth of the nine 00 cyborgs and the only member with genuine combat experience before undergoing conversion. His knowledge of guerrilla tactics complements the military expertise of Cyborg 004, Albert Heinrich, and he is frequently called on for underwater missions, infiltration, and reconnaissance. His speed and mobility beneath the surface are unmatched by his teammates, making him essential whenever the group operates near or under water.
Pyunma's relationships are shaped by shared circumstance. Like the other cyborgs, he was abducted and remade against his will by Black Ghost, and he forms strong bonds with his fellow converts as they work together under the guidance of Joe Shimamura, Cyborg 009, and the scientist Dr. Gilmore, who helped them escape. His past ties to the fellow freedom fighters Kabore and Mamado connect him to the cause he fought for before his transformation, and his development traces a path from an unwilling test subject and hardened soldier to a committed hero who accepts his responsibilities as part of the team. Later appearances, such as the film series Cyborg 009: Call of Justice, continue to present him as a calm and capable figure, and the forthcoming Cyborg 009: Nemesis reinterprets the character with a new design while retaining his specialization in aquatic operations and his status as the only team member with military experience from before his conversion.
Pyunma's notable abilities are centered on the water. He possesses mechanical lungs that let him breathe underwater for extended periods, and his body was modified to be streamlined, which increases his durability and allows him to swim at very high speeds with great maneuverability. His cybernetic enhancements also grant him enhanced physical capabilities and, in some versions, heightened senses such as improved vision and hearing. Combined with his pre-existing military training and experience in guerrilla warfare, these abilities make him both a skilled combatant and a highly effective fighter in aquatic environments.
