Description
Koichi Kamiya, also known as Babel II, is the protagonist of the anime Babel II - Beyond Infinity. He is a seventeen-year-old Japanese boy who was raised in an orphanage. His ordinary life is disrupted by recurring nightmares of a hidden tower in a desert and a mysterious voice that speaks to him. These visions are the call of the alien entity Babel I, who crash‑landed on Earth five thousand years ago. Koichi eventually learns that he is the legitimate successor of Babel I, inheriting his bloodline and his ancient alien heritage. As Babel II, he becomes the chosen defender of Earth, entrusted with immense psychic power and the responsibility of protecting humanity from supernatural threats.

Koichi’s personality is marked by kindness, optimism, and a caring, almost maternal nature toward those who are younger or weaker. He is courageous in the face of danger but does not seek his role; his motivation is thrust upon him by destiny. Throughout the series, he develops from a confused, ordinary student into a confident hero who fully accepts his duties. His growth involves learning to control his newfound abilities and understanding the weight of the Babel Legacy.

The central conflict pits Koichi against Lord Yomi, a distant descendant of Babel who possesses comparable psychic powers and commands a global network of psychics and cyborg agents. Yomi initially resents Koichi for being chosen as the successor and aims to claim the Babel Legacy for himself, seeking world domination. Koichi is supported by three loyal guardians: Rodem, a shape‑shifting black panther that serves as a versatile protector and spy; Ropross, a giant, pterodactyl‑like creature capable of supersonic flight and devastating sonic attacks; and Poseidon, a colossal humanoid robot that rises from the ocean when summoned. His classmate Yumiko Furumi serves as a close friend and anchor, helping him maintain his humanity amid the escalating psychic warfare.

Koichi’s abilities are rooted in the supernatural power he inherits from Babel I. He possesses superhuman intellect and physical strength, as well as a wide range of psychic powers including telekinesis, telepathy, flight, energy projection, force field generation, clairvoyance, and teleportation. In the 2001 series, he can also activate a Babel Incarnation Mode in which the spirit of Babel I temporarily possesses him, greatly amplifying his capabilities. He commands the Tower of Babel and can summon and direct his three guardians in battle. These powers allow him to confront Yomi and his forces in a series of globe‑spanning conflicts, ultimately determining the fate of the Earth.
