Description
In the original manga and subsequent anime adaptations, the character known as Astro Boy in English is named Atom. He is a powerful robot created by Doctor Tenma, the head of the Ministry of Science, who built the android in an attempt to replace his deceased son, Tobio. Constructed to physically resemble the lost child, Atom was initially treated as a real son. However, Doctor Tenma eventually rejected the robot because Atom, being a machine, could not grow older or truly replicate the nuances of a human boy. As a result of this rejection, Tenma sold Atom to a cruel robot circus owner named Hamegg, where he was forced to perform. It was during his time at the circus that the robot was given the name Astro.

Atom's fortunes changed when he was discovered by Professor Ochanomizu, the benevolent new head of the Ministry of Science, who became his legal guardian and foster father. Under the Professor's guidance, Atom found a new family, which often included a robotic sister named Uran, and dedicated his immense powers to protecting both humans and robots. He embodies the role of a superhero, using his abilities to fight crime, combat injustice, and defend those who cannot defend themselves. His primary motivation is a deep-seated sense of justice and a natural inclination towards pacifism; he always seeks to resolve conflicts intelligently and through diplomacy before resorting to force. Atom has a profound care for all life, a trait that defines his heroic actions throughout his stories.

Despite his artificial nature, Atom possesses a childlike innocence and a warm, kindhearted personality. He is selfless and brave, often willing to risk his own existence to protect his family and friends. His most complex relationship is with his creator, Doctor Tenma. While Tenma feels genuine remorse for his abandonment, their relationship is strained, and Atom often tries to keep his distance, though he occasionally seeks to forgive him. In contrast, his bond with Professor Ochanomizu is one of pure, nurturing fatherhood, as the professor accepts Atom for what he is and encourages him to be a force for good.

One notable 2025 reimagining of the character diverges significantly from this classic origin. In this version, Atom is not created as a replacement for a deceased child. Instead, he is an advanced artificial intelligence in a robot boy form, designed proactively to address global environmental crises. Operating under Professor Elefun (a counterpart to Ochanomizu), this Atom focuses on ecological preservation, such as resolving animal habitat conflicts and pollution issues, often using a "Mini Robo Mode" to shrink down for his missions.

Atom's classic design and abilities, often referred to as his "seven great powers," are legendary. His most iconic ability is his jet-powered flight, achieved through boosters in his legs. He possesses immense physical strength, often cited as 100,000 horsepower. His other capabilities include superhuman hearing thousands of times more acute than a human's, the ability to understand dozens of languages, a computer-like brain for high-speed calculations, and an internal mechanism to distinguish between good and evil. For combat, his body contains various weapons, such as arm cannons or, in earlier versions, finger and rear-mounted machine guns.
