Description
Tsubaki Sawabe shares a lifelong bond as Kousei Arima's childhood friend and neighbor, a connection forged in their early years. After her father's death when she was eight, her mother remains present but rarely appears. She attends Sumiya Junior High School as a third-year student and deliberately chooses a nearby high school to stay close to Kousei.

Physically, Tsubaki sports chin-length chestnut hair parted centrally, its ends curling upward, and bright caramel-brown eyes. Her standard attire is her school uniform: a blue shirt, gray blazer, plaid skirt, red-and-white striped tie, navy stockings, and brown loafers. For softball, she dons a white short-sleeved shirt over a red turtleneck, red shorts with white stripes, a backward white baseball cap, and a small ponytail. Regular sports participation gives her an athletic build.

Athletically, Tsubaki excels in softball, her performance directly tied to emotions—anger sharpens her aggression, while sadness impairs focus. Academically, she counters perceptions of struggle by scoring a B on a notoriously difficult test.

Tsubaki embodies a tsundere personality: outwardly brash and energetic yet deeply protective, especially of Kousei. She confronts injustices, like challenging Ryota Watari over a friend's breakup. Though generally calm, she's easily angered and prone to risky adventures. Classmates once labeled her "creepy" or "gorilla" for her tomboyish athleticism, affecting her self-image. She masks feelings with smiles but experiences volatile emotional outbursts, including tears.

Her dynamic with Kousei shifts dramatically. Initially viewing him as a "hopeless younger brother" requiring protection, she develops unacknowledged romantic feelings. Her friend Nao Kashiwagi and boyfriend Saito help her recognize these emotions. She partly used her genuine affection for Saito to obscure her feelings for Kousei, though their later breakup stemmed from mutual similarities and Saito's interest in his baseball club manager.

Tsubaki grows distressed when Kousei considers distant schooling for music, fearing abandonment. She witnesses his bond with Kaori Miyazono, unaware Kaori is her rival. After Kaori's death, Tsubaki stays by Kousei's side, symbolizing steadfast support despite unreciprocated feelings. Though possessive, she respects his painful decisions.

Key quotes reveal her conflicts: "Everyone was stepping boldly one foot at a time... I was the only one not stepping forward" reflects her stagnation, while "Who cares about music? Who cares about words? We have all the time that we've spent together" prioritizes shared history over abstract expression.

Her name carries symbolism—"Tsubaki" (camellia) evokes transience, longing, and emotional waiting, mirroring her unresolved attachment. "Sawabe" combines "marsh" and "area."
