Description
Chihaya Ayase, a high school student with ochre hair and brown eyes, channels her striking presence into mastering competitive karuta—a Japanese card game rooted in classical poetry. Born June 1 and standing 167 cm tall, her early life centered on aiding her sister’s modeling career until a pivotal encounter with transfer student Arata Wataya. Recognizing her acute auditory reflexes, he ignited her passion for karuta, setting her on a path to reunite with him after his departure.

Co-founding the Mizusawa Karuta Club with childhood friend Taichi Mashima, she ascends to Class A in the Shiranami Society as captain, balancing relentless training with recruiting teammates. Academically indifferent and whimsically naive in daily life, she shifts into a fiercely strategic competitor during matches, fixated on claiming the title of Queen. Her single-minded devotion strains relationships, particularly with Taichi, whose unrequited love and eventual confession jolt her into acknowledging his unspoken sacrifices. Parallel to this, her bond with Arata—anchored in shared childhood ambition—drives her growth, even as his absence and hiatus from karuta introduce emotional turbulence.

A finger injury during tournaments tests her resolve, underscoring her perseverance. Quirks like collecting Daddy Bear merchandise and wearing her sister’s hand-me-downs contrast her competitive intensity, while her affinity for Hyakunin Isshu poem #17 reflects her deep ties to the game’s heritage. Poem #46, invoked during Taichi’s confession, mirrors her uncertainty toward love and destiny.

Her evolution spans founding the karuta club, conquering physical setbacks, and reconciling loyalty to friends with her quest for independence. From a sister’s shadow to a determined leader, her journey across media iterations charts ambition, self-discovery, and the fusion of tradition with personal ambition, framed by unwavering dedication to her dreams.
