Description
Hatsuharu Sôma, known as Haru, has a striking two-toned appearance featuring shaggy white hair with black roots, brown eyes, and a slender frame. He favors punk-style clothing incorporating leather, chains, and self-made jewelry, sporting multiple ear piercings and an arm tattoo; his school uniform is worn unbuttoned without a tie. His personality shifts dramatically between two states: the calm, polite, and thoughtful "White Haru," and the aggressive, loud, confrontational "Black Haru," triggered by stress or provocation. This duality emerged as a childhood defense mechanism against ridicule from Sohma family adults who mocked him as "stupid," referencing the zodiac folktale where the Ox was tricked by the Rat. Martial arts training, initiated by his parents to manage his anger, failed to resolve his emotional turmoil.
Haru harbored intense childhood resentment toward Yuki Sohma, the Rat spirit bearer, blaming him for the bullying. After confronting Yuki, who listened patiently and challenged Haru's self-perception by asking if he believed he was stupid, Haru recognized the manipulation and developed profound loyalty and affection for Yuki, calling him his "first love." Later, witnessing Yuki's abuse by family head Akito, Haru secretly arranged for Yuki to live with Shigure Sohma, negotiating this by agreeing to address Shigure as "sensei."
He formed a deep childhood bond with Isuzu Sohma (Rin), the Horse spirit bearer, supporting her through parental neglect. Their relationship turned romantic in their teens, leading to a physical relationship hidden from Akito. When Akito discovered it, Rin took the blame, resulting in Akito pushing her from a second-story window. Severely injured, Rin ended the relationship to protect Haru, claiming she no longer needed him. Haru remained unaware of Akito's role in Rin's injuries until Hiro Sohma revealed the truth, prompting Haru to confront Akito and search for Rin. Finding her weakened and delirious, Rin confessed her enduring love, leading to their reconciliation.
Haru shows protective loyalty toward younger zodiac members like Kisa Sohma (Tiger) and Hiro Sohma (Sheep), who affectionately calls him "Haru-nii" (Big Brother Haru). He frequently provokes Kyo Sohma (Cat), seeking fights, though Kyo dismisses his behavior as lewd. Haru's poor sense of direction causes him to become lost for extended periods, like during a three-day search for Kyo.
When Yuki collapsed from illness, Haru transformed into his black-and-white bovine form to carry him home, revealing the curse to Tohru Honda. Later, he whispered advice prompting Tohru to address Yuki by name, intentionally triggering Yuki’s transformation from happiness. Haru attended Akito's banquet announcing the curse’s dissolution. When the curse finally broke, he and Rin felt its disappearance simultaneously; he described the bittersweet moment as comforting, and they embraced. Afterwards, he assured Yuki their bond would endure and openly reaffirmed his love for him, soothing Rin’s subsequent jealousy.
In later life, Haru married Rin, and they became parents to fraternal twins, Sora (daughter) and Riku (son). He maintained friendships with Momiji Sohma and others, reflecting on their growth and the curse’s end with maturity.
