OVA
Description
Coola is a prominent antagonist in the anime Dragon Ball Z Gaiden: Saiyajin Zetsumetsu Keikaku, often referred to as Plan to Eradicate the Saiyajin. He is a member of the same powerful, unnamed race as his younger brother, Freeza, and is the son of King Cold. In this specific story, Coola does not appear as a living being but is resurrected as a Ghost Warrior by the mad scientist Dr. Raichi. Alongside other past villains like Freeza, Lord Slug, and the saiyan Tullece, Coola is brought back to serve as an instrument of revenge against the last remaining Saiyans. Dr. Raichi, the last survivor of the Tsufurujin race who were wiped out by the Saiyans, uses a machine called Hatchhyack, powered by hatred, to generate these spectral versions of the warriors.
In terms of personality, this Ghost Warrior version of Coola retains the core traits of his living counterpart. He is depicted as being more composed and logical than Freeza, handling matters in a more serious and calculating manner. While sharing his brother's arrogance and ruthlessness, Coola is less prone to underestimating his opponents, a trait that sometimes gives him an edge in combat. Unlike Freeza, who uses his transformations to suppress his power, Coola's unique fifth transformation is utilized to drastically increase his strength. However, even this enhanced state proved insufficient against the power of a Super Saiyan. His primary motivation in the original movies that introduced him was to restore his family's honor after learning that a Saiyan was responsible for Freeza's death, viewing his younger brother as spoiled but still representing a legacy he was determined to protect.
In the Plan to Eradicate the Saiyajin OVA, Coola's role is that of a major obstacle for the protagonists. As a Ghost Warrior, he is fundamentally different from a living fighter. These apparitions are composed of Destron gas and have the ability to regenerate endlessly after being slain, making them virtually impossible to defeat through conventional physical combat. Coola engages in battle with Goku, forcing the hero to confront a powerful enemy that cannot be permanently put down by standard techniques. The only way to neutralize a Ghost Warrior is to expose them to an antidote that counteracts the Destron gas they are made of, or to destroy the source of their creation, the Hatchhyack machine. This makes his role in the story less about a personal vendetta and more as a persistent tool of Dr. Raichi's genocidal plan.
Key relationships for Coola center on his family and his creators. He is the eldest son of King Cold and the older brother of Freeza, and while he openly despises Freeza's arrogance, the Saiyan threat to his family's supremacy is what drives him to action. In the OVA, his master is Dr. Raichi, who has created him as a puppet for revenge. He also has tangential relationships with the other Ghost Warriors, Freeza, Slug, and Tullece, as they are all pawns in the same plot, though they do not actively cooperate as a team. His development in this OVA is static, as he is not a living character who grows or changes; instead, he serves as a manifestation of the past sins of the Saiyans coming back to haunt them. He represents the relentless, undying hatred of the Tsufurujin, a foe that cannot be simply punched into oblivion without understanding the source of its power.
Coola possesses a wide array of notable abilities common to his race and some that are unique to this incarnation. As a Ghost Warrior, he is said to be much more powerful than before, capable of rivaling Goku in his Super Saiyan Full Power state. He retains his signature transformation into a massive, more powerful final form, which grants him horn-like protrusions and a face mask. His techniques include the Supernova, a vast sphere of destructive energy that he can generate faster than his brother can. He can fire ki blasts from his fingers or his eyes with deadly precision, and he is capable of surviving in the vacuum of space. The Ghost Warrior version shares the weakness of needing to be defeated in the same way he was originally killed, adding a tactical layer to the heroes' fight against him. Unlike his later Metal Coola form from other movies, this version is not a cyborg, but a purely spectral entity created from technology and vengeful energy.
