Description
Colonel Johnny Rico hails from Buenos Aires, where his affluent family opposed his military enlistment, preferring academic pursuits. After an apparent Bug meteor destroyed Buenos Aires and killed his parents, Rico permanently committed to the Mobile Infantry of the United Citizen Federation. His early career featured rigorous training under Sergeant Zim, where he excelled despite initial struggles, and participation in the catastrophic Klendathu invasion, suffering heavy losses due to faulty intelligence.

Rico later joined the Roughnecks unit under Lieutenant Jean Rasczak. During a mission to Planet P, the unit sustained significant casualties, including Rasczak and Rico's romantic partner, Dizzy Flores. Promoted to lieutenant, Rico played a pivotal role in capturing a Brain Bug, a strategic Federation victory. His career advanced to general, though he faced setbacks, including blame for the Fall of Roku San after defending civilians against superior officers during an Arachnid attack, leading to court-martial and near-execution before a covert rescue.

Following the John A. Warden incident, where an Arachnid Queen hijacked a Federation ship, Rico was demoted to colonel and reassigned to a Mars-based training facility. There, he instructed inexperienced recruits known as the "Lost Patrol," who exhibited poor discipline and low morale reflecting Martian civilians' war-weariness. During a sudden, overwhelming Bug invasion of Mars, Rico suspected a Federation conspiracy, especially when communications were severed and Sky Marshal Amy Snapp planned to destroy Mars with a Q-Bomb while publicly framing General Carl Jenkins for negligence.

Separated from his unit and presumed dead after a combat drop, Rico encountered a telepathic projection of Dizzy Flores, later revealed as a manifestation sent by the imprisoned Jenkins to motivate him. Guided by this projection, Rico trekked across Mars to disable the Q-Bomb at a terraforming tower. His recruits, having undergone significant development, defied orders to rescue him. Together, they disabled the bomb and overloaded the tower's systems, creating an improvised weapon that decimated surrounding Bug forces.

In the aftermath, Rico exposed Snapp's conspiracy through leaked data, leading to her downfall. Jenkins resumed his position, and Rico was promoted back to general, tasked with leading the campaign to reclaim Mars. Rico bears physical markers of extensive combat experience, including an eyepatch, facial scars, and a streak of white hair. His leadership emphasizes duty, adaptability in crises, and reliance on core infantry tactics, consistently using the combat knife as a vital tool.
