Unmo, a soldier of the Hokuriku Allied Forces, joins their desperate campaign to reclaim Unato Station from the kabane horde. Amid the chaos, he confronts Kageyuki Komai—once Unato Castle’s lord, now a kabaneri after halting his kabane transformation through self-inflicted strangulation. Unmo challenges Kageyuki, torn between hope that his former leader retains humanity and dread of his monstrous instincts.

Kageyuki recounts his fall: after his transformation, soldiers driven by terror attacked him, fatally wounding his daughter Miyuki as she shielded him. In anguish, he bit her to force a kabaneri conversion, only to watch her mutate into the nucleus of a fused kabane mass. Sympathizing yet resolute, Unmo faces Kageyuki once more during the coalition’s castle assault. He deliberately allows Kageyuki’s blade to pierce him, pleading for the man beneath the monster to resurface.

Kageyuki rebuffs him, claiming betrayal and irreversible inhumanity. Their clash underscores the pervasive dread of kabaneri and the ruinous cost of denying their lingering personhood. In their final encounter, Unmo sacrifices himself, creating a crucial opening for Mumei to strike Kageyuki down, paving the way for the coalition to dismantle the kabane threat consuming Unato.
