Kaede Manyūda holds the treasurer position within Hyakkaou Private Academy's Student Council. He initially appears as a cold, calculating gambler who consistently takes what he deems the high road, relying on observation and prediction to win. This stems from a deep-seated fear of being deemed worthless and discarded, a vulnerability shared with Itsuki Sumeragi, whom he recommended for the council.
Tall with pale skin and dark eyes, he originally possesses well-kept black hair. After a traumatic defeat by Yumeko Jabami, shock turns his hair completely white. He wears black-framed glasses and the standard academy uniform: a red blazer with black trim, white dress shirt, black tie, and dark plaid pants.
Driven by his father's ambitions to become Student Council president, Kaede orchestrates events behind the scenes, including facilitating Yumemi Yumemite's gamble against Yumeko. Falsely accused of sabotaging Yumemi's event, he denies the allegations and publicly announces his presidential bid. This forces a public match against Yumeko, mediated by the disguised Kirari Momobami. During their "Choice Poker" game, Kaede gains the upper hand through analysis. However, Yumeko exploits his psychological need to win with his strongest hand, provoking him into betting his life. Her unexpected three-of-a-kind victory shatters him, leading to his expulsion from the council with Kirari's declaration, "You're fired." He collapses unconscious and is hospitalized.
Post-defeat, Kaede becomes apathetic and withdrawn, viewing life as meaningless. Itsuki Sumeragi, entrusted with his care by Yumeko, attempts to rouse him through mockery, though he urges her to leave. He later participates reluctantly in the "Greater Good Game" at Yumeko's request. Initially indifferent, he collaborates with Yumeko in a bluff to expose the real traitors, Itsuki and Miroslava. When Itsuki is attacked, Kaede instinctively tries to intervene, showing residual concern. Itsuki later reveals her gamble aimed solely to reignite his spirit, leaving him conflicted about her affection. He expresses horror upon learning of Yumeko's temporary abandonment of gambling.
His relationships are complex. He respects Yumeko's abilities while viewing her as a pawn, though she ultimately outmaneuvers him by exploiting his predictability. He empathizes with Itsuki due to their shared fear of failure but initially underestimates her resolve. His ambition to dethrone Kirari is met with her utter apathy toward his threats.
The *Kakegurui (Kakkokari)* spin-off maintains his core seriousness but reveals a secretly perverted side, including misinterpreting Midari Ikishima's praise of Yumeko as a sexual encounter. The live-action adaptation portrays him with more overt ambition, actively seeking to rule the school and reacting angrily to refusals like Mary Saotome's rejection of a council invitation; his scheming to replace Kirari is less subtle than in other media.
