Description
Shutendoji hails from the ancient Oni tribe and commands the highest class of power among his kind within the Yo-kai World's underground community, as recognized by Yo-kai Lord Ananta. His driving ambition is to overthrow the Enma Tribe's rule and restore his people's reign. This quest compels him to relentlessly seek "The Princess," an individual prophesied to wield command over Yo-kai, and to locate the five Sacred Swords required to awaken her latent abilities.
In *Yo-kai Watch: Forever Friends*, Shutendoji acts as an aide to Shien during a Yo-kai World tournament to determine its next ruler. He actively encourages Shien to defeat Enma the Elder and briefly observes the human protagonists—Shin, Itsuki, and Tae—before dismissing them as insignificant. He departs the scene upon Overseer's intervention.
Across other media, Shutendoji infiltrates human society using the human disguise of Theo, a 13-year-old boy with black messy hair and blue eyes. Posing as a student in Summer Adams's class, facilitated by his subordinate Voidera disguised as a teacher, he meticulously conceals his immense magical power. As Theo, he exhibits a cunning and manipulative personality, exploiting allies like the fortune-teller Sendo Rei and discarding them once they outlive their usefulness. However, upon identifying Summer as the reincarnation of "The Princess," he demonstrates unwavering loyalty, immediately halting his plans at her command despite his enthusiasm occasionally grating on her.
Shutendoji's personality blends ruthlessness with fierce dedication. He exhibits little sympathy, readily viewing comrades as expendable tools if they hinder his objectives, exemplified when he strips Rei of her clairvoyance and orders Fukurou to eliminate Cole. Conversely, his commitment to "The Princess" manifests as near-blind obedience, initially leading him to follow a Yo-kai possessing Isabelle under the mistaken belief she was the true princess.
The character draws direct inspiration from the Japanese folklore figure Shuten-dōji, the legendary oni king who commanded demons from Mount Ōe before being decapitated by Minamoto no Raikō, reinforcing his portrayal as a high-ranking Oni Yo-kai.
In combat, Shutendoji wields abilities like "Drunken Oni Fist" and "Super Sword Hunting." His "Oni Shower" Soultimate Move attacks enemies while lowering their stats, and his "Demon Blood" skill enhances his strength and spirit when at full health. A celebratory variant, Shutendoji Gashou, appears in *Yo-kai Watch: Wibble Wobble* during New Year's events, featuring festive attire and enhanced abilities.
