Description
Miyo Akino is a ghost character who appears in the anime and film adaptations of the series. She was the older sister of Matsuki Akino and died at the age of seven as the result of a kidnapping and murder, becoming a lingering spirit. She has long blonde hair, light greyish-blue eyes, and wears a white flowing dress. Before her death, her family ran the large inn Hananoyu. After dying, she remained as a ghost in that inn, but because no one could see or hear her, she felt lonely and began to play pranks on the living in an attempt to get attention. Her personality is mischievous and playful; she enjoys teasing others and initially mocks the young innkeeper Okko Seki and her abilities when she first encounters her. However, Miyo is also kind-hearted underneath her teasing exterior. When Okko proves able to see and speak with her, Miyo decides to leave her family's inn and move into Harunoya Inn to live with Okko and the other spirits there. Her motivation shifts from loneliness to a desire for companionship and belonging. Throughout the story, she develops a bond with Okko, offering comfort and support when Okko faces emotional struggles, such as when the truth about the car accident that killed her parents comes to light. Miyo also interacts with the other supernatural residents, including the ghost boy Uribo and the baby demon Suzuki, and helps them work together to run the inn. She has no special abilities beyond those typical of a ghost: she is invisible to most people, can move through solid objects, and can appear and disappear at will. Her most notable ability is her capacity to pull pranks and paint faces, which she does both for fun and to provoke reactions. As the story progresses, Miyo becomes a loyal and caring presence for Okko, showing that despite her initial teasing, she is capable of genuine warmth and empathy. Her role is both a source of comic relief and a spiritual guide, helping Okko grow as an innkeeper and as a person. Miyo's development involves moving from isolation and mischief to finding a place where she is seen and valued, ultimately becoming an integral part of the Harunoya family.
