Description
Motoharu Tsuchimikado is a recurring character who appears as Kamijou Touma's next-door neighbor and classmate in Class 1-7 at a certain high school in Academy City. He is tall, around 180 centimeters, with short blonde hair and black eyes, and is almost always seen wearing sunglasses and an Aloha shirt. His speech is marked by a Kyushu dialect and frequent use of playful verbal tics such as "nyaa" and "dazei." This carefree, eccentric exterior is a deliberate misdirection, as Tsuchimikado's true identity is a high-level onmyoji turned spy. He was once a magician of Necessarius, the Anglican Church's magical arm, and was later infiltrated into Academy City as a triple agent, simultaneously serving Necessarius, the city's leader Aleister Crowley, and other unknown organizations. Both sides are aware of his multiple loyalties but tolerate his presence for the time being.
His public persona is that of a cheerful, slightly perverted trickster who openly declares himself a liar and betrays others without hesitation. Beneath this mask lies a coldly pragmatic operative who will carry out ruthless missions—including assassinations—to preserve the fragile balance between the science side and the magic side. He is highly intelligent, preferring to outmaneuver opponents with strategy and manipulation rather than direct confrontation, though he is also a formidable hand-to-hand combatant capable of defeating even the experienced street fighter Touma in seconds. Originally a master of onmyodo, he achieved the highest rank of Onmyo Doctor and is skilled in feng shui magic, using origami shikigami and magic circles for barriers and attacks. However, after undergoing esper development in Academy City, his body reacts violently to magic use. His esper ability, Automatic Reverse, creates a protective barrier in his blood vessels that can withstand the explosive backlash of using magic a few times, but the risk of death remains high, so he generally avoids spellcasting unless absolutely necessary. His unique magic name is "Blade that Stabs the Back" (Fallere825).
Tsuchimikado's motivations center on protecting the peace between the scientific and magical worlds, as well as those he is close to, particularly his younger sister Maika, an orphan he was assigned to integrate into Academy City. Despite his cynical methods, he maintains genuine friendships with Touma and their mutual classmate Aogami Pierce, often joking with them in school. He also works alongside other Necessarius agents such as Stiyl Magnus and Index, and communicates regularly with Aleister Crowley. Over the course of the story, his role deepens from a seemingly comic background figure to a key behind-the-scenes operator who orchestrates complex schemes. In later arcs, especially in the New Testament volumes, his true capabilities and the brutal lengths he will go to for his objectives are fully revealed, making him a pivotal figure in the larger conflict between science and magic.
