Description
Rita Bernal is a Newtype ensign in the Earth Federation Space Force, piloting the experimental RX-0 Unicorn Gundam 03 Phenex. Born November 30, U.C. 0072, in Australia, she was orphaned after her parents died in the One Year War. During a U.C. 0079 school trip, she experienced a precognitive vision of Operation British's colony drop on Sydney. With childhood friends Jona Basta and Michele Luio, she warned residents, saving an entire town and earning them the title "Miracle Children."
Following this event, the Titans paramilitary group took Rita, Jona, and Michele to the Augusta Laboratory for Cyber-Newtype experimentation. This involved invasive surgical procedures, psychological conditioning, and restraint in brainwave-altering devices, leaving Rita with extensive surgical scars on her back. At Augusta, she formed bonds with fellow test subjects Shelby Korts and Nanai Miguel, offering emotional support despite harsh conditions. Nanai helped the trio escape in U.C. 0085, though they were recaptured after a failed attempt to steal food.
In U.C. 0087, Michele learned the Titans planned intensified experiments. She conspired to reveal Rita as the true Miracle Child to secure her own adoption by Luio & Co. This led to Rita's transfer to the Institute for Continuing Study (codenamed "Helenus Rebirth"), where experimentation persisted after the Titans' dissolution. By U.C. 0093, the Institute traded Rita to the Earth Federation in exchange for covering up another incident. She underwent pilot training under instructor Vitaly, demonstrating exceptional skill.
Assigned to pilot the Phenex Gundam in U.C. 0095, Rita participated in a space-based activation test alongside the Unicorn Gundam Banshee. The Phenex's psycho-frame resonated with an attacking ReBawoo mobile suit, causing it to go berserk. The Phenex destroyed its mothership and vanished, with Rita declared missing in action. She died in the cockpit, her soul merging with the Phenex's psycho-frame, allowing her consciousness to persist within and pilot the mobile suit as an extension of her being.
Rita reappeared in U.C. 0097, sensing the impending threat of psycho-frame weaponry resurgence post-Laplace Incident. As the Phenex, she intervened during a Neo Zeon attack on a Side 6 colony, disrupting a battle involving Zoltan Akkanen's Sinanju Stein and Neo Zeong II. This triggered Operation Phoenix Hunt, a Federation effort to recapture the Phenex. Throughout these events, Rita communicated telepathically with Jona and Michele, appearing in her younger form via psycho-frame projections. Her abilities included manipulating the Phenex's psycho-field to generate defensive barriers, propel the suit faster than light, and remotely control its shield boosters as "funnels." She contained a fusion reaction caused by Zoltan's Neo Zeong II to prevent catastrophic damage to Earth.
In the conflict's climax, Rita's consciousness, joined by Michele's spirit after her sacrificial death and Jona's temporary entry into the Phenex's cockpit, combined their wills through the psycho-frame. This union overwhelmed the Neo Zeong II's systems, neutralizing Zoltan and preventing further destruction. The Phenex then departed Earth's sphere at superluminal speed, carrying Rita's spirit. Defined by selflessness, optimism, and a desire to protect others, traits persisting beyond physical death, Rita expressed a belief in reincarnation, wishing to return as a bird symbolizing freedom from human conflict and expectations.
